Terrified,40 & pregnant,with heath problems,& lots of pain meds.

I am 40 years old,have heart trouble,high blood pressure,thyroid disease,and have hernited and buldging disc from car wreck,been taking methadone,lorcet,soma,& xanax for 12 years,and found out i'm 8 weeks pregnant and don't know what to do.I'm terrified,did not intend on getting pregnant but it happened and i need any advise that i can get,i don't know if i can carry the baby to term or what damage i could of done already,i am so scared and don't know wht to do,if i should have an abortion or not.Please need any advise,don't know what to do,or what's best for he baby or me.If anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it,Thanks Needs Help.....

First...I am so sorry you are going through this. I too, had many manyhealth problems  and surgeries and had to be a dozens of meds, strong pain meds as well. I detoxed off allof them and have not taken more than a pre-natal/aspirin for years.

It is tough takes patience, detox under a watchful eye of a DR it can be done.

However...is this DR NUTS?  

Detoxing you off of METHADONE while you are prego?  OMG....he is insane.

I know a lot about methadone as my sis has been on due to addiction for 20 years. I've been to Narcanon for classes to learn more. This drug is worse than heroine and can cause a siezure while w/d. I have seen it.

Please look into this more carefully and go to an addiction specialists and the OBGYN (who is obviously unfamilar with this drug) to come up with a plan.

There are other ways to manage pain w/o drugs. I am glad you are searching for help.

Thanks and i talked to my Doctor about my meds. and some of them could be or are very dangerous to a baby,i found out at 8 weeks so all these meds i was taking regurlarly and i don't know what damage i've done already and i feel terrible,and my heart meds they don't know about them at all so gotta wait to see the heart dr. 3-1-10,i do not believe in abortions but because of the meds/ my health, i'm very confused and scared.My ob Dr. did not tell me about the meds he told my pain dr.and he (pain dr.)told me,they are trying now to detox me slowly but not off methadone,it's to dangerous,but i just don't know what damage i've already caused.It's tuff and i just don't know what is best for the baby at this point.Thanks and God Bless,Missy

Try just slowing down a bit and taking it one bit at a time.  If the only reason you are thinking of terminating is you are afraid of what has happened with the meds/health issues, you need to start by gathering all the facts.  Don't rely on the internet for this, speak to a medical professional. It's not enough to find out what you need to get off of, you need to know what the impact might already be, and how likely it is.  Get all the information and as Annie said, find out if anything is truly dangerous to the baby.  Information is power, and you don't want to do something you may regret just out of fear that may very well be unfounded.

If you choose to start weaning off of the various drugs/meds, make sure you do it under medical supervision.  

I know your scared, but try to put it all in perspective.  Hang in there, and please let us know how you are doing.  I wish you well.

I understand missy but with whatever has happened if you gave him the choice he would still want to live.. which is why he is still holding on...  Much more is the damage you can do to him once he is born if you do not take care of him and the 5 others you have mentally.. love them, get off the meds if you can so you can be a more present mom... love them and give them the live you wish you had

I took a list of all my meds to the Dr.with me.And at first he said to stay on them but now he says to detox off some of them,I am a christian and i know that God gave me this baby for a reason,i have 5 kids and i do not believe in abortions,but i am terrified of what i have already done to this baby.Also my health.I would love to have a baby if possible but i'm very scared and confused.Thanks

Talk it all over with your doctor.  Take a list of every med you have been prescribed and are taking, including herbals, and go over the list.  Be sure nothing is dangerous to the baby.  The doctor will work with you.

honey you have been given a gift.  A little baby is inside of you and God has entrusted you with his life.  Imagine with all the things that you say are wrong with you... you have one thing so right.. A perfect little angel in your belly.  Now that is a true blessing.  You do not need an abortion you just need to care so much for this little life that so that he knows from now on that he is adored and that he is loved.  You must have a dr with all the meds you are on.  Go to him on Monday and work out a plan.  there are meds that are safer to take with a child while managing your conditions.  I too have high blood pressure and my baby was fine.  I realize you have some other issues but maybe you were given this little child to help you to sort out some of the medicine you have been taking and to think larger than yourself for a while. Who knows the reason but he deserves life and you my dear are in charge of giving him that!  What an awesome task.  What an honor to be chosen.  What a dream to give life.  Now if you feel that you cannot handle raising your little angel there are plenty of parents out there that will take you little baby home and love him forever and ever and all you have to do it is take care of him for the time he is with you and he will be so thankful for that.  Love that little baby today missy, put your hands on your belly while you are laying down tonight and think about how wonderful it is to have a tiny little itty bitty baby inside of you growing right now...
