question about pitocin induction---PLEASE READ

5n1
Okay ladies, I am going in Friday for my induction...They are going to start me on pitocin!! I have had 2 kids all natural, no pain meds, nothing!!! I am dialated to a 4 but no effaced. So, my question is, how is the pitocin, does it hurt really bad? I do not plan on receiving any pain meds with this one neither!! Could you please share you experiences with me to ease my mind? also, with me not being effaced will this affect the effectiveness of the pitocin?

Thank you ladies in advance!!

with my last baby I was dialated to 3/3.5 cm for 4 weeks then decided to be induced at 39 weeks, I had previously had two natural medication free births and wanted to ba able to do it again if possible. I talked with my Dr and asked that he break my water first, so that I was able to walk around and hopefully get labor started without pitocin or having to be constantly monitored, he agreed, but said if it was'nt progress after a few hours we would have to start pitocin. he broke my water and I walked around the hospital for a a while then went in the jacuzzi tub for a while when, I got out they checked me and I was 7cm, so unless it stalled (which it did'nt) I would not need pitocin at all. 5 hours after they broke my water i had my little boy without havig to have pitcin at all! and the women who was induced at the same time as me with pitocin still had not had her baby yet! talk with your Dr about it, they can always start the pitocin aftre a few hours if things are not progressing. if I were to want or need to be induced again with this baby (I'm 36 weeks and already 3cm and 60% effaced, sp not likely , but you never know) I would have them break my water first again and then let me try and labor on my own! especially since I am trying to have a natural birth again with this baby! Good luck, sorry I could'nt help with how the pitocin will work, hope you have your little tomorrow eithier way! keep us updated!

They broke my water both times, shortly before starting the Pitocin.  The first time, active labour started fairly quickly.  The second time, despite being on the Pitocin, it took a good 3 hours for my contractions to be hard and regular.  I got stuck at 5cms for awhile.  The OB who ended up delivering my son ended up havig the nurses turn off the Pitocin pump and have me labour on my own....and I went from 5 to 10cms in about an hour at that point.

You can refuse anything, including Pitocin. And I think you should go in with a plan that is more comfortable to you because you sound uncomfortable with the idea of just starting off with Pitocin. Don't just give in because big man doctor says you HAVE to have it because you don't. It is going to cause harder contractions and make your body work harder but without very good results. Pitocin starts a chain of events that can make labor longer and more difficult.

Breaking your water causes a hormonal reaction (a NATURAL one) that puts your body into labor. When my water broke at home I started shaking and my teeth started chattering just like women do when they get epidurals because my body was reacting to the hormones. It settled down by the time we got to the car. My baby girl was born 5 hours later. I chose to have her naturally- no IV, no epidural, no continual fetal monitoring, etc.

When I was having my other daughters the doctor broke my bag of waters each time (didn't break on its own). I had my first daughter 3 1/2 hours after they broke my water and I had my second daughter about 4 hours after they broke my water. And I did have Pitocin and an epidural with those two but that was before I knew about what these drugs can do to you and the baby.

Because this is your third baby you are a "multip" (meaning you've given birth multiple times) and most likely to get baby out a lot faster than the other two babies you've had.

I would either call and speak with someone on L&D or in your doctor's office or discuss some changes to the plans when you arrive tomorrow morning. You can tell them that because you've given birth naturally before that is your goal for this labor as well and that you'd prefer to have your water broken and the freedom to move as you need to move. If after 6 hours they can check on progress if you haven't given birth yet and then move from there.

If you are progressing on your own (1 cm or more per hour) then you do NOT need Pitocin and should refuse it.

Good luck! I can't wait to hear what happens!

Oh okay, so I CAN get them to just break my water? That is very helpful, I did not know that. I know I sound so petty or chicken, but both mine were all natural, and I really wanted to try that route again... Is the odds just as good with them breaking my water, me laboring on my own?

The danger with Pitocin is "Pit to Distress". If the doctor cranks that Pitocin up too fast it can cause the baby's heart to react and put baby into distress, increasing your risk of needing an emergency cersarean.

What you can do instead is ask for them to break your water and let you labor on your own for at LEAST 6 hours before they introduce Pitocin. Your water can be broken for up to 24 hours or more before they should intervene, unless of course baby shows distress anyway.

Breaking your water is a more natural augmentation of labor. Pitocin is synthetic and you may regret it if you've had natural births before and desire a natural birth this time as well.

I've been induced twice.  What they do is give you a starting dose and gradually ramp it up, based on how your body responds and how your labour progresses.  Not every woman will necessarily require meds for pain management with it, but I do think it's more common - I had back labour with my first pregnancy and the epidural saved me, let me rest so I'd have enough strength to push at the end.  I also got an epidural the second time.

I would just recommend that you go in with an open mind.  If you can do it all natural, then all the power to you - but there's absolutely no shame in admitting that the pain is too much and you need help to get through it.

Good luck!! :-)

When you get pitocin it will give harder stronger contractions but if you get a epidural it will make your pain less and slow the contractions down. Then they will want to give more pitocin which is fine for you cuz the pain relif but the baby with more pitocin can end up in distress from all the pitocin wich ends up in a c-section. So with pitocin I would recomend not getting a epidural unless your ok with a c section. Just think every contraction is one contraction closer to your new baby. It will be over soon enuf. Good luck!!!

I had it twice with both my kids, first time was bad because they gave me the wrong dose.  Second time was fine, I was dialated to a 5 for a week they induced with pitocin and it made my contractions go from 10 minutes apart and non productive to 2 minutes apart.  I had my son 1 1/2 hours after the pitocin no pain meds at all and it wasnt all that bad to me.  hope this helps, good luck to you.

Well the only thing with pitocin is it starts hard labor right away where as the natural way it just progressively gets harder.  You have had two other births so you know what to expect with hard labor.  I am sure you will do great.  Congratulations!!!
