down syndrome ultrasound

i'm tossing up if i should get the down syndrome ultrasound/blood test or not, the thought of it has got me rather scared reading all the information on it and i'm not exactly great with blood tests so if it can save me from getting one that's a plus.
opinions from people who have had it and who haven't? as i only know people who haven't gotten it done, i guess i just want the pro's and con's

I got it done and with having a baby that tested positive for CB the first time ( she's only a carrier) I didn't want to go through the whole pregnancy thinking everything was fine then pow here's a surprise that I wasn't ready for or educated on ....its very simple test and ultrasound and one vial of blood then they call you if your at a high risk of having a baby with downs and if your not they don't call you.....not once was an amniocentesis mentioned when I got mine .....you get to see your baby who doesn't love that :)

Yes thays called amniocentesis amd they only do that if you agree to do it and only if you high risk for birth defects you guys really need to be more knowledgeable before you give advice and opinions when you have no idea what you are talking about all you do is scare them :-( and yes you can get false positives as with most tests in life. Worse, case they  day your high risk and you make desicion as whether or not to do further testing. And NO ONE can ever tell you to terminate your pregnancy. And the nuchal translucency test with blood test also checks for a couple other birth defects one of which is quite serious. Thing is no guarantee your baby will have a problem even if your in a higher risk. But usually test is going to come back fine just make the decision prior and think about how the results may affect things. Personally I just having ultrasounds :-)

I was offered to have it done but refused because it would have been a series of tests ( from what doc said) and the final test ( if I remember right) was them sticking a needle into my stomach to take out some fluid to test. Nope nope nope. Not for me. Plus there is that 1% chance something could happen after having that done, and I'd rather not chance at all. It's up to you though as always. Wish you luck.

Not getting it because you dont want a blood test is a silly reason. Youre about to have more tests run then you've ever had in your life. A lot of needles will be near you. I hated it too but you get used to it. I got it for the opportunity to see my baby early.  I had made the decision that down syndrome would not change whether or not I would carry my baby to term. Some people have an idea of what they want their children to be capable of. I know people with Down syndrome are capable of love and happiness. That is all I could ask for personally.

If it's not going to impact you on if you keep your little one or not, don't do it..because then your just gonna stress your baby and yourself out even more than you should and stress is bad for the baby..I understand a Down syndrome baby may be harder to take care of then someone who doesn't have it, but when the situation arises you can take care of things then..but I totally support whatever decision you have. good luck to you. (:

I just had mine at 12 weeks wednesday. I get the results by wednesday. But it was exciting to see the baby again. From 10.5 weeks to 12 weeks they grow so much its fun.

I got it and they said if something was wrong they would call and if okay they won't. They never called, hhowever i think people should give birth to their babies and be proud of the baby. It's a blessing.

The tests can be faulty a friend of mine was told her son would have downs and to terminate she refused and he was healthy.

We got it with our first purely because it was an excuse to see our little guy :)) although i didnt realise it would be out of pocket cost of 160 odd

This time i didnt bother we didnt wanna waste the money and we would keep our little one either way :)

I did really miss having the extra ultrasound though :(

I got it done with mt first. Just so that I would lnow, its not that I wouldnt keep her, but I could prepare for what to expect and what to have knowledge about if my child did have it.

We refused both pregnancies. We have immediate relatives with down syndrome and believe we would manage just fine, already decided we want a baby depsite other family issues they can't test for, and there are far worse things they can't test for in life. Its such a personal choice. Good luck!

I didnt.care if my my kids were going to have it but i still got the test done just in case. So that if your child dose have it you can read up and get prepared and educated so that you are ready for the baby.

I got it because my insurance covered it and it ended up being free. If I were to have to pay for it out of pocket I was going to skip it because it's a very expensive test and the chance is so small especially when you're young. But I was glad my insurance covered it because if you're going to have a child with down syndrome it would be handy to be prepared ahead of time.

I'd get it. At least you'd know what's in store. The tests aren't always 100% but I had it and felt better knowing what's going on

Well I didn't get it because I don't care if she has down syndrome or not I'll love her (not saying its any different with you) I heard those tests have A LOT of false positives and Why put the baby in harms way due to stressing. Just my opinion not stepping on anyone's toes.
