You're 16 weeks, they couldn't find it, and they didn't do an emergency ultrasound?!?! That's messes up. ): I'm sorry. I bet you he's just turned a different way... don't freak out.. it happens a lot.(:
The same thing happened to me. But the used a portable u/s to check on it about 5 mins after not being able to find it. And sure enough baby was fine. And just laying in my back. They still have a hard time finding it anf I'm 29 weeks
If it helps, this happened to me at 14 weeks with my previous pregnancy. They sent me for an ultrasound and everything was fine - they concluded it was a position issue as the previous poster suggested.

this can occur due to babys positioning in your uterus, if its right at the back, also being abit bigger may have contributed to this
