Breastfeeding question

Hey ladies. Brayden will be 3 months on monday. I cant believe how fast the time goes. Anyway... I have a  question.. I tried breastfeeding in the beginning but it was very painful and he was very fussy like he wasnt getting any milk so we switched to formula. He has been on formula since he was a week old. I want to try to breastfeed again because i know breastmilk is the best and i want him to have the best. Is this possible? Have any of you tried breastfeeding again after so long or know someone that did and succeeded?

Yes, it is very much possible but it will take work - but will be WORTH IT!! Contact a lactation consultant through La Leche League or through your local major hospital. Purchase or rent a hospital grade pump. Ask your doctor about supplements you can take to increase your supply. Breastmilk is amazing, and what you produce is made specifically for your baby. No two breastmilks are the same. Babies love breastmilk (have you ever done the taste test? formula tastes gross in comparison!) but your little guy may take quite some time to fully switch over. Be patient. Your efforts will benefit your baby greatly... It will take a huge time commitment (you will form a whole new relationship with your breasts - LOL) but hang in there and get started as soon as you can. Best wishes!! :)

Congratulations on your new baby!

It is possible and it's called, relactation. There are women who have done it though it requires a LOT of patience and work. Of course you would need to supplement formula and if your milk supply builds up you could slowly wean him off of the formula.

The first step would be to start pumping very frequently... like every 2 hours with an electric hospital-grade pump. Your breasts need the stimulation in order to start milk production.

Will your baby latch onto your breast? You might try using an sns which is a system of tubes that you tape to your breasts... so that you can supply him with formula while he nurses from you... this would get him used to nursing while also stimulating your breasts to produce milk.

Have you considered contacting a lactation consultant to assist you?  Look at their website for more info:  lalecheleague.org

Best of luck!!!

try this link www[dot]breastfeedingonline[dot]com/domperidone[dot]shtml

replace the dot with real dots to get to the link.

Domperidone is also used for women who wish to breastfeed adopted babies, so it should help for getting your milk supply up.  It is apparently very safe with very few / infrequent side effects.

do you still have any milk?  I reckon you could try pumping or putting him to the breast frequently to try to get it started.  i think there are also drugs that can help trigger the milk supply.... talk to your doctor about this also....

Once it starts and he can feed regularly the milk should come in again.... but no experience on this directly...

domperidone (motilium) and reglan are 2 drugs that may help trigger it...
