African American hair

Hi, I am 12 wks pregnant this week and I have not had a relaxer in my hair since before Christmas 2014. I was wondering if/when you African American moms have used a relaxer during your pregnancy journey? My hair is naturally curly so I'm not running around looking like Chewbacca or anything (lol =]) but I guess my question is how safe is it to get a relaxer and did it affect the grade of your hair? I've read that relaxing your hair could go either way when your pregnant (turn out really good or really bad).

I stick with lace fronts, extentions, or weave. Or just wear my hair natural.

I'm mixed but half african american. I never did a relaxer while pregnant. With my first and with my second I never did one but I did dye my hair at 24 weeks. I have lost some hair in the same spot each pregnancy but it always comes back after they are born. I guess I didn't think the harsh chemicals would be safe is why I never got one while pregnant.

Also, ive thought about doing braids but I've never had any type of weave or anything added to my own hair so I'm not going to start now. Thanks everyone

Thanks @EverythingN1, I've gotten the okay from my beautician that it's ok to hedge it relaxed and she does use no-lye relaxers. Are you relaxed or natural? Just curious. ..and thanks again for your comment!

Ahhhh the first comment is not true at all lol all you need to worry about is making sure your in a well ventilated area as to not breathe in to much chemical, the chemicals can't enter your blood stream and get to baby :o and your hair is different during pregnancy not sure if it's for all woman but sometimes even with dye your hair won't take the colour as it would normally. I still dye my hair, I get foils and I have to admit it's not the same colouring as it would be when I'm not pregnant but it still does the job :)

I have thick, 4c natural hair so I am not of much help, but had relaxed my hair most of my life. I can confidently say that a no-lye relaxer will be okay while you are pregnant (I asked my midwife and also take ed classes). It will be good if you keep sparing them out like you are to prevent too much pH disruption in your hair. As long as you take care of your hair and see a professional that you trust, you will be fine. As far as if it can go good or bad, it varies with everyone because each person has their own regimen. Good luck!

You are not suppose to relax your hair because of the chemicals that can go in your blood stream and to baby. Also the texture of your is different. So when you relax it it may or may not relax your hair because of all the hormones you are producing
