Am not sure where all the ladies hang out anymore lol...but question about dental and asthma

CYW
As you all know, Cameron is asthmatic..He has been seeing the dentist since he was about 15 months old-as per his pedi's request. The dentist had informed us that he would be prone to having weak teeth and whatnot and would have alot of cavities early on... We went to see the dentist about end of June and was told, he does have alot of enamel deterioration...I've brushed his teeth ever since he had them at 5 months old.. and twice a day, even purchased the enamel restoration one for kids etc-which he does so well.. Well last night while brushing his teeth I noticed....A CAVITY...very noticeable...I was livid and so sad...called the dentist and he has maaany maaaany maaaany cavities...All due to his puffers...Ive always rinsed his mouth after puffers etc... now im wondering how many of you moms out there with children who are asthmatic have had to have dental work this early on.. i feel soooo bad.. like gah...im so upset and now hes going for the surgery in 4-6 months...or less and i am a nervous wreck.. we will have a consultation with the anesthesiologist and im soo worried about him being put out...how many of you have had kids put out who are asthmatics... i hear it can be dangerous...

It's called Fluridex Daily Defense Professional Gel Formula, Max strength fluoride the clean mint flavor. Indicated for prevention of decay, orthodontic decalcification and hypersensitivity. Indicated for use in children 6-adults. They also make childrens bottled water w floride in it. I hope this helps. And good work doing the extra calcium! :)

Try not to beat yourself up about it, it's not your fault and you are doing the best you can given what you have to work with :). I used to use the enamel toothpaste but apparently the prescription one you get from the dentist is better. When I started using the prescription floride paste from the dentist was when I noticed a huge improvement in my teeth and even had two checkups in a row with no cavities!  Il not sure if it's safe for children... I'll check the bottle right now and post back to you :)

I have an asthmatic daughter also whose 4. We've been every 6 months to the dentist since almost 2 we go again thurs. She thankfully has not had any cavities however her enamel is very deteriorated in many places.

Being they had such a hard start, I really try to limit her sugars no gum or gummy candy etc. Honestly, brushing her teeth is a nightmare! She hated Florida toothpaste all of them but dentist said it's a must. So sometimes I do slack well see how tomorrow goes.

I hope your son grows out of the asthma and you don't have to continue to go through this

Just to clarify.. my son is only 3 yrs old..

@momo-from what I gather he is getting his cavities all filled, he has about 10 and the dentist spoke quickly about protecting his teeth.

@Sun-I've changed his toothpaste the the enamel one for kids.. I use it for myself and purchased it with him seeming that he has enamel deterioration and i found the toddler gel toothpaste was not taking the plaque off properly...he is currently on some calcium supplements...maybe you could tell me also.. i had stopped the whole milk and switched him to soy but then he was refusing to drink the white soy milk..did not like the taste...what whole milk produces alot of mucous for him and funny enough when i cut it out...all was fine...but seeing his teeth are bad, i've upped his milk back.. what can ya do.. if he will drink it..he needs it...and he drinks ALOT more than any child i know.. like he will drink about say average child drinks 50oz a day he drinks about 130...but he is fine.. its just asthma and dry...

Thank you so much for making me feel a little better ive been freaking out wondering what i could have possibly done to prevent this..blaming myself...but after reading up about alot it's just the way it was meant to be i guess.. its what happens..it just frustrated me so much cause i know parents who dont give a cr*p about their children oral hygene and i have and look.. this is what we have to deal with...we have about 3000$ worth of dental work to have done on his teeth...how horrible is this? gah! :( Soo sad

I'm an asthmatic and have horrible teeth. I brush and brush and brush and floss. The only thing that has helped was rx toothpaste from my dentist that is floride leave on that I have to use once a day. Without it I have several cavities every visit and cracked chipped teeth. I keep joking that they need to pull them all and just give me dentures. It's so bad I need Valium or anxiety when seeing the dentist. Also of course I'm allergic to the epinephrin in Novocain so makes things worse. BUT I've had several surgeries both oral and otherwise with my asthma and I've been fine. I've had asthma since I was a child.  The anestisiologist should tell you to have him use his inhaler right before surgery and he should be fine.

I've had asthma since birth. The problem with the inhalers is the steroids which deplete your body of calcium and teeth need calcium. You make want to speak to your pedi about calcium suppliment and the dentist about rx floride treatment and seeing the dentist every three months instead of 6. Good luck!
