Babies need very little. A place to sleep, something to keep them warm, mom's milk, and clean diapers. Our consumer society swears it costs thousands of dollars to prepare for a baby. It really doesn't. Check out local swap/sell/trade sites or freecycle for secondhand clothes, cribs, blankets, etc at great prices. Check out sunbabydiapers.com where you can get a dozen cloth diapers for $60 which you can use hundreds of times instead of disposable diapers that cost so much and can only be used once. I spent less than $200 on absolutely everything I needed until my son was 4 months old and I needed 6 month clothes for him.
