Walking helps but can also cause them if you don't stretch after. I only get them in my calves so I'm not 100% on great thigh stretches but if you look online it should give you some great options, just make sure you feel the stretch while doing it or it doesn't help relax the muscle.

I got them with my son and now with this pregnancy, yeah potassium and water help but the key is stretching daily. Deep calf stretching or thigh (depends where your cramps are) they are very common in pregnancy especially when your sleeping. Don't over do the stretching but make sure you stretch the muscle good daily. Days I don't do it I feel the cramps coming on days I do stretch my legs feel fantastic.

I didn't ask my doc why But I mentioned it to my mom and she said that baby is prolly sitting on a nerve. I get them to and if I stretch my legs will lock up, and that hurts like a mofo...
