Midwives give more personal care. They are much less likely than doctors to rush into interventions that aren't really necessary. They trust that a woman's body knows what to do, instead of trying to rush through things and order all kinds of extra testing and medications that aren't really proven to help. Their c-section rates are incredibly low compared to doctors who deliver in the same facilities, and their patients are much more likely to report positive birth experiences mainly because of the personal care and attention during prenatal visits as well as during labor and delivery.

There are two different classifications of midwives, at least here in the US. A CPM (certified professional midwife) attends home births, and has completed a certificate program (generally three years) plus an in depth internship to learn her trade. A CNM (certified nurse midwife) has earned a master's degree in midwifery on top of a bachelor's degree as a registered nurse, making it a minimum of seven years in school before even beginning an internship. She has as much training in her field as a family nurse practitioner, and generally delivers babies in a birthing center or hospital setting (though a few also perform home births).

As someone who appreciates personal care I much prefer a midwife. I don't want to be a number or a barely recognized name or a list of test results. I don't want a doctor who insists on taking a urine sample at every visit or a vial of blood every month for testing that isn't proven to improve outcomes. I want to know that if I call the office with a question I'll have a phone call back within a couple of hours from a provider who knows my whole story - and if I call with an emergency I'll get to talk to them within five minutes. I want to know that I have have a provider who will sit with me all night long doing perineal massage throughout labor to help me deliver my baby without needing a single stitch (like I had with my first) instead of a doctor who will insist on a c-section because they can convince me that my body isn't capable of natural birth and we should just get it over with by performing major surgery so they can get home in time for dinner (like what has happened to a few friends of mine). No question about it, in my opinion.

There are many different types of midwives. CNM-CERTIFIED NURSE MIDWIFE- who specializes in nursing and has some midwive experience (you will see these in hospitals and birthing centers). CM/CPM- CERTIFIED MIDWIFE/CERTIFIED PROFESSIONAL MIDWIFE- they don't have a degree in nursing and get their experience from apprenticeship under another midwife. (They are mostly found in small business with several midwives, also can have their own business, you choose where you deliver and they will met you there but most times they will suggest birthing centers or homebirths). The big difference between a midwife and an ob is that one trains in natural birth the other in surgery, one can't write prescriptions the other can. I personally see a CPM because CNM tend to act like nurses under an ob which I don't like.

A midwife can not do a c section only a doctor can.  I was told that is the only difference or already it was with the midwives I had with my last pregnancy

A doctor can be an obstetrician or a gynecologist who is professionally qualified and has specialist knowledge about reproductive system and child birth. Whereas a midwife is more or less like a nurse. She might be having knowledge through her long term experience. I always prefer a doctor.
