Dr found two HB but in scans only appears 1 baby

Hi,

I'm now 27 weeks. When I was 8 weeks my Dr (GP) detected 2 Heartbeats with his doppler and was convinced I was carrying twins, when I went for an ultrasound there seem to be only one baby. I've had another ultrasound at 20 weeks and on my last visit to my GP he could again hear two heartbeats, he said it's happened before that they've missed a twin pregnancy in ultrasounds.. other sinthoms that made him think this was a really high difficulty to breathe (which shouldn't be happening this early in pregnancy acording to him), rapid weight gain over the last 6-8 weeks without apparent reason and a pretty big bump! I'm measuring 2 weeks ahead of time...
Is this possible??? anyone had a similar experience? I'll be having an ultrasound again on Sunday but as you can imagine I'm pretty nervous...
Thanks!

It's almost impossible to believe that at 20 weeks, twins would not be seen on an ultrasound.  Both times I had twins, they were seen on the ultrasound at 6 weeks.  I don't know why your doc is telling you that a handheld doppler would be more accurate than an ultrasound, but the fact that he keeps saying this would make me a little dubious about his medical advice in general.  Good luck, I hope you get twins if that is what you want.

Here in Ireland we have combined care, I see an OB every 4 - 6 weeks and my GP in between...  I think it's only one, it doesn't really make much sense that they've missed it in the hospital, it was probably the placenta and he's mistaken it for another baby! I'll update on Sunday with whatever we see in the 3D US. Thanks for the answers!

With my last pregnancy, My doctor had said he found 2 heartbeats at about 13ish weeks. upon my 20 week ultrasound there was only one, He must have been getting the cord, or placenta in my case. I would think they would have seen a second baby by now. Good luck

With you having been 8 weeks yes a baby can be laid behind another one and missed but I would nto think so at 20 weeks. That used to happen more a long time ago but we have more advanced us machines now. But hey who know things happen!!! I guess I would be nervous too being that dar along and nto knowing if it were twins! Why are you seeing a GP and not an OB? I would have a good US at the hospital if that is the case by a trained tech who does them all the time. Sorry if I misunderstood that part.
