Cathader? (sp)

My sil told me she had to have a cathader during labor and I so do not want one at all! Was just curious if you have to get one or if it's one of those things that depends on your case?

See that's what I worry about. That they'll tell me I need something and try to force it on me. I know I have rights. I do believe i'll be saying no to the cathader. The iv on the other hand, I'm not looking forward to, but I don't want to get dehydrated plus I will have the pitocin drip along with cervadil. It's a bit late for talking to my doctor. It's impossible to talk to him over the phone. And for the past 2 appointments i've had I haven't seen him. I saw him at 37 weeks. He set the induction date, he let me choose. Then at the next 2 weeks he was too busy and they wanted me to wait for another dr and then last week he was at the hospital and the nurses at the office just had me sign paper for the induction. So I have a lot of questions about how it's going to go.

It really depends.  Many hospitals will do them standard.  It's also typical to use them if you get an epidural - this makes sense becuase you won't be able to get up and use the restroom.  If you are deliverying at a publically funded hospital (if they accept medicaid they are publically funded) you have every right to refuse ANY treatment or procedure they want to do.  Even if you do have an epidural it is not absolutely necessary that they give you the cathetor.  It is also NOT absolutely necessary that you have an IV either.  Unless you have extenuating circumstances such as needing IV's due to a positive Group B strep test or are a first time VBAC.  The IV restricts maternal movement and can actually HINDER labor by not allowing the woman the freedom to move as she feels necessary.  Many of these interventions that hospitals routinely use these days are absolutely NOT a necessity in a normal childbirth situation.  I would sit down with your doctor NOW and make your concerns known.  You HAVE THE RIGHT to refuse these if you feel they are not necessary. Many women simply go by what doctors/hospitals say or what their policies are assuming they are in place to protect the patient and this is often far from the truth.  These procedures/interventions are often-times in place to protect the hospitals/doctors and provide a convenience factor for them.  NOT The laboring mother.

I wasn't into getting needles either I had both of my babies natural. I had pitocin with my first cuz I wasn't dilating and they give you an iv. Natural the second time and had an iv so I wouldn't get dehydrated. The iv wasn't so bad. They give catheters only when you get epidurals or spinals because you'll be numb and won't know when you have to pee.

I didnt have an epidural and I had to get one with my second because I lost alot of blood and they didnt want me getting up. But Im pretty sure as long as you dont have the epidural or any complications you should be fine. Trust me after pushing out a baby, a small tube in your urethra is a breeze!

Don't think you Need one if you don't have epi. Could be wrong though. But honestly they don't hurt.
