Help!!!!

Me and my fiancé have a 6 month old pitbull boxer mix and he is hyper! We had him since he was a pup 6 weeks old and hate to get rid of him but now that I'm pregnant I don't think we have a choice. He's always jumping up to greet us and I'm afraid he'll knock the carrier out of my hands walking through the door, or chew the baby toys, or hurt the baby, not by biting cause he's not aggressive but just by his claws..We would have to lock him in the kitchen so the baby could play on the floor. We live in an apartment so we don't have a backyard for him to run around in for a couple of hours and I don't think we'll be moving into a house for another year or so due to finances. Any one have any ideas, thoughts or advice....

We have a Rottweiler, lol he's a outside dog so not very worried about him but maybe get a pack of treats and put a baby doll in the caraway and set it down, when he gets close say no and give him a treat it worked with getting our dog to adjust to certain people, pits aren't my choice dog just because my sister had one and her husband was playing with him and a toy and his jaws locked down on his finger.. I mean it was a accident but at least with other dogs you can pry their mouths open. Your child comes first and yea you made a commitment to the dog and should try obedience classes before getting rid of him, but it doesn't make you a bad person for getting rid of a dog. Smh ^^ above
wanted drama, its your life :) and your child I'm a ftm too and if our dog possed a threat to my child he would go to a family members til she's older

Sorry for multiple messges, try teaching him the leave it command when it comes to baby stuff. We taught the oldest one this and it works so well we put our food next to her and say leave it and she wont dare touch it. Strong simple commands work the best with pit bulls.

Oh, and anyone who comes inside your place will need to do it, every time. It will sink in quicker that way

We have three pits, and i would never give my girls up. They do calm down, you just have to work with him, when he jumps, make a sharp noise and turn your back on him everytime until he understands its a no no, he will get the hint, it just takes time. All three of mine were hyper and jyst working with them works. Dont give up.

I have a pit bull, he's hyper but he's crated, he goes out on a 25 foot leash tied to a tree when we're home and ofcourse after he is walked.. maybe you should invest in a crate for when you leave with baby aand come home, then let the pup out when you get home. Like others have said, dogs are family too :) I could never give Nitro up, not even to family.. guess I'm crazy like that lol

Um, I.understand a dog becomes family. But fir you to.say you would never get rid of it..  What if your baby is allgergic? My.cousin had her dogs for 4yrs and the other for 11yrs. She.didn't.hesitate to get rid of them when she found out her daughter was.allergic to dogs... You willing to do the same?
my baby will come before a.dog any day.

I just gave away my pit boxer, it was extremely sad. I had him for two years my 2 year old daughter was sad, but since baby number 2 is on the way we decided someone else could give him a better life with better training. We couldnt give him enough exercise. Pit boxers need a lot of exercise especially hyper ones.

My puppy did the same thing. I was almost ready to give her up but then I started using vinegar mixed with water in a spray bottle and everytime she would jump or chew, I would spray her. It only took a couple uses and she stopped. so maybe try that before. getting rid of the puppy.

I know he's a baby that why we didn't really wanna get rid of him. He's smart and really loving and is such a good protector. I just have to work with him more on not to jump up on us. He learned sit in the matter of 2 days and that goes for all of his commands, so he's my not stupid lol
It's just being patient and a constant ritual of getting him not to jump like potty training took me almost 2 months but now he rings the bells on the door to go outside. I haven't given up on him and I won't I'm just worried about my baby as any first time mom would be

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and have a yorkie and a lab. When I got them both fixed, they calmed down alot. I've also had them visit with my two older sisters since both of them have infants to try to get them use to the sounds a baby makes. I have also devoted time to train them to be gentle and not to jump. Its working so far

Cool idk what else to tell u maybe he just needs to have those toys that make them get the treats out or take him to a park to play nd have fun i brought my little dogs there to play and they loved it he seems like he just needs something to keep him busy i know my dogs settle down if we give them bones u could always ask someone at a pet store or ur vet what r some ways to keep him busy i understand u don't wanna get rid of him so these r just some things i would try doing he just sounds like he has too much energy :) hopefully he gets more calm as he gets older

Ladies, let's focus on the OP's request for helpful suggestions and not turn this into an argument, please.

I'll weigh in with mine: I have a now 7-yr-old pit/lab mix that I got when she was 8 weeks old  They eventually calm down!  Try getting some soft dog toys that you can throw so the dog can fetch, plus stuff he can chew.  My dog always has ripped the stuffing out of stuffed toys, but if you get the toys without stuffing, they last awhile.  Walgreens has the best deal I've found - there's a stuffing-less toy that has 9 squeakers in it.  We throw, fetch, throw, fetch, and mine eventually settles down and just chews on the squeaky parts to make it squeak.

You just have to spend a lot of time training him these next few months, and pitbulls are way worth it. Originally bred to be nanny dogs they are amazing with little ones. Just be patient nd remember he is still a baby

I didn't ask for you to criticize my life and my choice of getting pregnant
I'm more worried about my baby and its SAFETY then being scared about what my dog will do
He knows his commands he's just hyper and likes to jump. I've tried him to sit, come, play dead, speak, lay down give me paw so I have worked with him

That's a very ignorant thing to say. The best dog I've ever owned was my apbt maybe it had something to do with the owner not knowing how to train a dog...

You made a commitment to that dog. You should do everything in your power to keep him. Train him not to jump. Show him the babies toys and make sure he knows they are not his. I can't stand it when people get "scared" of what the dog or cat will do to the baby...its not his fault you got pregnant....

pit bulls are sketchy with kids too. especially if they were there first they are a very jealous breed. trust me I used to have a pure breed blue nose pit

I wouldn't worry dogs adjust fast to kids just try buying toys that can keep him entertained for awhile things to do with him buy treats and try teaching him tricks it keeps their attention and makes them tired at that age their minds r like sponges :) its wonderful to see what things they can do i know my girls get very tired after tricks and u could take the pup to a dog park and play fetch or something that tires them out too :)

I agree with @mommy24721 that you should look into obedience classes. I have an 8 year old chihuahua and a two year old pit bull and I can't see myself letting go of either of them. My Chihuahua is an attention hog and my pit is the hyper one. We've been working with both of them letting them sniff baby items and telling them to be easy/gentle.

When i had my first child i was living with my mom and we had a pitbull and a boxer and they were both so gentle with my son. They would lay next to my bed when he napped, the would wait outside the bathroom when i showered him and when we got home they would walk with me until i put the carseat down and then just sit there next to it. They were so in love with him. My son grew up with them and i never had any problems with them. It's like they knew they had to be gentle with my son and they haven't forgotten even now when i visit my mom they just Rub up next to him and wait for him to pet them.

I have a 6 month old pitbull and am 8 months pregnant. He is still pretty hyper but we have just been devoting time every night to train him not to jump and lay down when told and he has gotten a lot better in just a few weeks. My doctor also told me to start introducing him to all the baby stuff we have especially the ones that make sound because then he will be use to it by the tims baby gets here and wont be so curious and want to get into it.
