birthcontrol after birth

I know I'm only 20 weeks with a little girl(yay still can't believe it) but as im 20 and DH is 21 we want to wait to have more kids until later on, DS is going to be a little over 2 when the baby is born and i was wondering what type of birth control can i be on and still breastfeed? I know i will be very fertile right after the baby is born and i'd like to have both kids be out of diapers before we have another LOL. Thanks!

I was put on the regular BC pill right after my first and it killed my milk supply :(  So I've done more research, you either need a non-hormone BC or a progestrone only BC.  I switched to the mini pill and was able to get my supply back up for a while.  I plan to do that again, although you need to take it at exactly the same time (or +/- 3 hours).  Breastfeeding does make it more effective, so if you stop you might want to switch to something else as many dr's suggest you do (although I didn't switch when I stopped and didn't get pregnant on it).

My midwife said other options aside from the mini-pill are non-hormone IUD's or condoms basically.

And I know two women who breastfeed around the clock AND STILL GOT PREGNANT!  So be VERY careful if using that method.

PS You can switch doctors. If you are not comfortable with them you need to move on. I know MC+ can limit you on who you see but your birth matters and is very important. People put a lot of research into finding a new car so shouldn't your prenatal care be given just as much attention? You can use ratemds to find doctors in your area (probably listed under obstetricians or gynecologists) or I would recommend finding a midwife. My midwife takes MC+ and I switched to them when I was 36-37 weeks pregnant because I was really unhappy with my OBGYN.

Did you know that breastfeeding exclusively, around the clock, can prevent you from ovulating? It is said that breastfeeding is a great form of birth control for *some* women.

The copper IUD should be fine as it doesn't contain hormones.

Yeah I'm not sure, I might try the mini pill and just set an alarm everyday for the same time to take it. Ill have to talk to my doc about it after everything gets transferred from my old town to where we live now.  I dont like my current two OB's that i'm seeing, they are very vague in everything. Like today i got my 20 week u/s and i saw the doc right after the u/s tech gave him the info and he says "well the babies size looks good, right on target for gestational" and that was it. srsly??  or like after my first visit when they did all the blood work they wouldnt tell me my results over the phone so i waited for my next appt and i didnt even get to see my ob, i saw a nurse, they didnt tell me my HCG count she says"well your positive for HPV, a strain thats high risk for vervical cancer, you'll need to get another pap and a colcoscopy(sp) after the baby is born" and that was it. UGH

sorry i ranted a little there lol. Thank goodness we moved and medicaid in WI is so much better then IL, i have alot more options for docs.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

Oh and does anyone know if you can get the copper IUD(or atleast i think its an IUD right?) while BF?

I got the mirena after i  had my daughter a year and half ago. And I got it taken out feb 2010. I liked okay. It did its job and kept me from getting pregnant and ending my periods. But when I got it out my dr had trouble finding it. I was fixing to get an U/S to find it. Then he found it. It was stuck. And he had a hard time getting it out. I bleed more because of it. After me and my huband have another I am thinking about getting fixed.

Yeah I don't really want an IUD or mirena, i have friends that have had both, before pregnancy or after birth, and didn't have good experiences.

Momo1409- with depo shot its really different for everyone, my mom got pregnant when she'd been off by two weeks on when her next shot was due, and i was on depo for 3 years, got off last november and was pregnant by april. But like you said alot of people it takes a long time to get pregnant again if at all. I didn't have any bad side effects from it either like i know some people do, but my best friend who just had a baby was on it before she had her baby and got on it after and now has horrible side effects. I'm guessing from your body chemistry being a bit different after having a baby.

HeatherLF16- Yeah i've heard so many horrible stories about mirena i dont think i'd chance it, and the mini pill eek, trying to remember to take something the exact same day with a newborn LOL

I'm still BFing a little bit and I'm going on the "mini-pill" which is recommended for Breastfeeding moms...it has progestrone only and it's a little tricky because you have to take it at the same time every day within a 3-hour span for it to be effective..but it has almost no case history of causing weight gain, so yay, and it's safe to BF on.

I've taken the depo shot, the patch, and 4 different types of pill..I'm hoping that Micronor (the mini-pill) works out for me. I got pregnant while on one of the pills even though I took it correctly.

I was originally going to get Mirena after this baby but my insurance messed up so I had to wait and I'm glad I did..my neurologist said it was a big N-O because my headaches are so bad and it's known to make them worse...so mini-pill here I come! I start it on sunday..gonna see how it goes.

It's nice to see I'm not the only one who would never get mirena again.  I feel like people I spoke with all loved it so I got it.  But I would nt do that again.  I guess it's pills again for us after this

Well idk if it is exceptable while breast feeding but I do not recommand the depo shot! When u get off it will make it a lot harder to have kids again if at all!

My son is 5 weeks old I have my 6 week appointment next week where I will be getting birthcontrol.  I researched the mirena there are a lot of people that like it and it is safe for breastfeeding, but I personally didn't like the side affects and risks associated with it.  They have a website where you can read all about it (www.mirena.com).  Also, the mini pill (progerterone only no estrogen) is safe for breastfeeding and won't cause your milk to dry up.  But, but since it's so low dose any little mess up on it and you can get pregnant ... you have to take it at the exact same time daily without fail.  Breastfeeding didn't work out for me I only was able to for 2 weeks, so I am just choosing plain old birth control.  =)

I'm pretty sure any type of birth control is ok. I got mirena inserted after I gave birth but I hated it so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
