My First Baby... pre-eclampsia

I have been diagnosed with hypertension for 2 years now. Ive been taking my meds and my bp has been great. My Dr told me my chances of having pre-eclampsia is high during my third trimester. My sis in law had the same problem yet she wasnt controlling it and her baby was born with down syndrome. Will not controlling your bp cause serious birth defects like down sydrome???? Im really nervous about it now...

Oh, and I forgot to tell you...After it was all said and done, God blessed me to give birth to a happy & healthy 7lb. 9oz. Baby boy, with NO defects, health issues, or any abnormalities. As long as you do your best, you will be fine :) Sending prayers for you and the lil one.

I had pre-eclampsia with my first child also. I was pretty young and went to EVERY appt., but I nevrr knew I had it. All I knew is my blood pressure was consistently outrageous, and my iron was almost flat-lining. I took maybe a total of 10 prenatal vitamins, and threw the rest out because of the nausea and vomiting it induced. I finally found other supplements that were baby-safe. Anyhow, I said all this to say, no, it wont cause Down's Syndrome, BUT if you're not on top of everything, it can be fatal for both mom and baby. Not trying to scare you, just being honest. I had never even heard of pre-eclampsia until I had a seizure and ended up in labor & delivery.

Give her some comfort to know that it isn't her fault.

It's impossible...people with ds have an extra chromosome that's causes the symptoms of the disorder...there isn't anything that can cause it once the pregnancy begins. Young and older women have a higher chance of having a baby with ds because there is mire of a change that their eggs are faulty. Sounds like your mom in law wants to blame someone. You should let your SIS know too. It might gv

Pre eclampsia won't cause ds. That is something that happens at fertilization. Like the other poster said I would discuss this with your doctor to be safe though.

Thank you! I have an appointment today so Ill ask. Its just my mother in law believes that since my sis didnt control her blood pressure her baby came out with ds. Idk how accurate that is. Sounds to me as if my in law is just trying to find a reason to blame her for the baby having down syndrome o_O

While preeclampsia is a dangerous  condition, downs syndrome is a chromosomal disorder that happens at fetilization. I would tell your doctor that your SIS had a child with ds since it may ( or may not) be hereditary. There are certain taste they can do to see if your child has the markers for ds.
