Being induced puts tons of extra stress on your body and your baby's body. It's essentially forcing your body to start an enormous biological process that it isn't ready for yet, with synthetic hormones (pitocin, usually) that is working directly in opposition to your body's natural hormones that are working to keep that baby in there until everything is ready to go. It makes contractions come very strong and very fast, wearing both of you out quickly without necessarily making the needed progress.
Natural labor just makes more sense, unless speeding up the process is indicated for medical reasons. A 30 minute drive might seem like a long way but considering how long the average first time mom is in labor, it's really nothing in the grand scheme of things. You certainly don't want to wait until contractions are three minutes apart to leave for the hospital, but you don't have to leave at the first sign of contractions, either. Your mom is just nervous. That's normal. Just smile, tell her you'll think about it. Talk to your doctor about your own concerns. But remember that your body knows what to do, and that allowing labor to begin and to progress naturally is safest and healthiest for you and your little one.
