How far along am I, do I trust my Dr.?

Hello everyone, So I went to my Dr. today (again) and had an U/S. After the U/S he still thinks that I am going to have a MC and if offering me a D&C when I am ready. When I asked him what makes him think I am going to MC he said because he is not seeing a viable pregnancy on the U/S: aka no heartbeat or fetal pole and this should be showing at 8 weeks. So I am suppose to come back in one week and get another U/S or really he expects me to MC before then.

This does not add up to me and I was trying to explain this but he wasnt really getting/listening to what I was saying, so my question to all of you is how far along am I??
My History: MC bleed Feb 28-March 4 2011. Had sex that weekend. March 11 I felt that I was ovulating (thats what mucus and desires lead me to believe) had sex that night and sometime during that same week. Took a positive pregnancy test on March 31 and April 2 (instantly positive). So what I look at it I am about 6 weeks. The measurement on the U/S today said that sac measured at 5W5D but the Dr. says 8 weeks. I am really confused. And if the U/S measurement is right (and not 3 weeks too small) then not seeing a heartbeat or fetal pole is OK, right??
Thanks for any advise my mind is obviously all over the place. I told the Dr. I was not ready for a D&C.

Never underestimate your instincts sweetie. Miscarriages are misdiagnosed ALL the time. I swear doctors don't get as much training in conception because they all have their own ideas of what to expect and sometimes they just don't line up. I know I didn't go to medical school but I've gained so much knowledge as a woman, as a mom and as an advocate for my own health by learning about conception.

Your dates lead you to believe you're 6 weeks and the sonogram shows a sac measuring 5w5d. That is good enough for me and I would trust that! I don't know where he's getting 8 weeks from?!

Doctors automatically add on 2 weeks when dating a pregnancy - so either they will count the weeks of the pregnancy starting at the last menstrual period (which is usually about 2 weeks before ovulation) or if you know when you ovulated they will add 2 weeks on to that. So if you are counting that you ovulated 6 wks ago your doctor would add 2 weeks to get that you are 8 wks pregnant. It is very confusing.

It seems pretty extreme that you doctor would be offering you a dnc right away. Dates can be off in the beginning - it happens all the time. Especially if you just had a miscarriage your cycles could be off by a bit and that can make a big difference in dating the pregnancy in the beginning.  I think you are really smart for waiting for another ultrasound. You could also request a blood pregnancy test. Usually they do two tests 48 hrs apart and the hcg numbers should be going up. I am surprised that your doctor did not offer you that because usually that is the first thing they do if they suspect a possible problem in early pregnancy (before suggesting a dnc!). Best of luck to you!

Personally, your doctor sounds like a nut... and their not always right so I agree, go with your gut on this one. Your dates sound better than his so I would also get a new appointment with someone else... I hope it all works out for the best!!

That's what I was thinking - that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I would go buy when you know you conceived and go by 6 weeks which makes your sonogram date perfect. Being off by a few days either way is NOT a big deal. When pregnant with my second daughter my dates were off by two weeks (then again they were basing it off my LMP and I was trying to tell them my dates would be off because I ovulated late due to a miscarriage I had just had).

I think Momma knows best in this case and that your doctor is incorrect.

From my thoughts 8 weeks would put me as pregnant during my MC and that does not make any sense to me.
