I really think it depends on the insurance and where you live. In Georgia w/ BCBS they don't do that. We have a local breastfeeding organization that loans out hospital grade Medela pumps for free. You just sign a contract and buy the kit (shields, hoses, etc). Then they call you once a month to see how the BFing is going. I found them through my local LLL (Le Leche League) You might be able to get some good info from them. YOu can look on their website for the toll free number and call to find out who is the contact in your area.
My insurance didn't cover anything for breast pumps. I ended up getting one from a friend and thankfully she gave me the Medela kind that I had originally registered for!
New law going into effect this year, ALL breast pumps are tax deductible in the US.
Wow, I hadn't heard that. That's good news to know!
I'll try and pull up my old post about it :)

Newsflash: Breast pumps are now tax deductible! http://wapo.st/gR5dmO
Not just pumps but all breastfeeding supplies are tax deductible. I even used my fsa card to pay for all my equipment tax free.
Rather than buy one have you looked into renting?
So I was able to get a breast pump, Ameda, that my insurance is paying for, I only had to pay 20%. I really wanted a Medela but the medical supplier only carried the one brand. But I've heard good things about them too. I'm so excited to have my breast pump and I can get it ready for when baby comes.
