I think his doctor was talking in terms of nutrition. If you are switching from formula to milk you need to realize that milk doesn't have the nutrients so they need a balanced diet.
By one year, an infant's digestive track has matured enough to be able to handle the protein content of cow milk, which prohibits its use prior to that.
If he doctor said its ok then you can definitely start introducing it. Jazmine is 10.5 months and is on breast milk so I cant be of any more help to you ;-)
My son never had formula...so I am no help there! He went straight from nursing to drinking milk.
I was curious if anyone mixed the whole milk with formula in the beginning, so they can get used to the taste in a watered down way (so to speak). Or is that a crazy idea? I never did with my kids, but thought I would ask....
I started the whole milk around 10-11 months old with my daughters. All you can do is try a couple ounces once a day and see how they react. If they're fine then make the switch!
I have 3 kids ages 4, 2 and 13months. My 2 year old was breast feed until 10 months then switched to formula until a a year. She was very small though. My youngest son was put on milk at 11 months with no adverse reactons. My oldest you know they always say that is the "learner" child and boy is that true. We started him on milk at about 9 1/2 months it took a little while for him to get used to it but once he did he did great. So really I think it just depends on the baby. You might just try giving every other bottle for a few days and if he does okay start giving it more until it just replaces the formula completely. Wish you the best of luck.
I started giving Jeremiah whole milk right around 10 1/2 months and he was 28-29 pounds. (He is almost 13 months now and still weighs the same) I started out giving him just 2oz a day to see if he first liked it and how he would react to it. He was fine and by 11 months I increased it to 4oz...by a year he was able to drink 8oz with no problem. He never had a problem with it. I only give him about 8oz a day as I don't want it to increase the mucus in his body and make him more prone to colds. He definitely doesn't need the fat from it as he is pretty chunky still! He also drinks rice milk (which he prefers, probably because I introduced that much earlier than the whole milk) He eats three solid meals a day and has been since about 9 months. He stopped nursing about 6 weeks ago. You can always try it and see how he does.
I did ask his doctor and he said that as long as he is eating foods from other food groups then it is ok. I was just seeing if anyone else had experience doing this under a year and also what is the best way to wean him off the formula...
Ask his pediatrician - Jazmines doctor specifically said NOT to introduce whole milk before 1 year of age because it can result in allergies. It is important to go by his doctors guidelines with something like this. Never do something because friends, family, or strangers say its ok and their little ones never had a problem - they do not know Braydens medical history, your families medical history, or how he might react. If in doubt, ask the professional.
