Online nurseries are pretty much a standard now a days, as is posting the birth in the local news paper.
Some hospitals passcode them, some don't. You'll just have to find out what your particular hospital does.
And yes, you have the right to refuse these services.
I hope they have that option to be private. When you go to the website, there at the bottom of the page you can get to the online nursery, from there ... no codes, or anything. I can see babies boys/girls, pictures, names, times of birth, weight, length, etc. It just seems a little weird that they don't even have a code or anything to see all this information.

When they take the photos they ask about the online nursery...you cannot access it w/out codes...but you can also opt out...just let them know...
Have you tried out the website? My hospital has one but you can only access info on the baby if you have a special code or something, because I was playing around with it and couldn't access it. But I agree with the others, I'd be surprised if you didn't have to sign a waiver, there are federal laws that protect patient confidentiality so I'm pretty sure they couldn't do it without your permission.
I am sure u can sign a waiver sayin u want everything to be private. I know when I had my daughter they made me sign one sayin whether or not ppl could call or come in to c me at hospital. I signed one sayin tht when ppl called hospital lookin for me or askin wht room I was in they told them i wasnt at tht hospital. Everyone I wasnted to talk to had my room telephone number and cld call me.
Just tell L&D, the nurses, and your OB you don't want to be on it, I'm sure it's not a requirement, and I agree with the privacy factor, I wouldn't want my baby blown up for the world to see before I even got a chance to show him/her off myself!!! ;)
