stretch and sweep...

Hiya ladies well my little one is due friday, however today I had the stretch and sweep never heard of it until recently, when i was induced with my son 16 years ago it was by pessarie etc.
Anyhow, ouch it hurt.but im curious to know how many of you had it and went into labour within 48 hours.I hear thats the most common, although doc said may need to have it again if nothing by end of week.I was only 1cm dialated, now he said im about 3cm.know got to get to 10,but so hopeing will come sooner rather than later.so for all you ladies who had it,how long after did you go into labour.

Mine didnt' necessarily hurt but it wasn't exactly comfortable.  I had mine on Thursday, on Monday morning I woke with a slow amniotic leak, though  L & D originally said it was urine...my son was born at 6:20 pm, not quite 2 1/2 hours after I got to L & D the second time.

well when you stretch the cervix and separate the membranes from it, the baby's weight and the pressure that it's head is putting down there generally causes the water to break....which causes contractions and cervical dilation... and the membranes naturally separate before dilation anyway so it can cause dilation and contractions without the water breaking first as well.

I've heard several women say it didn't hurt them, but I was crawling the walls and hollering when they did it to me, and I have a high pain tolerance, lol, but it was a pain I definitely wasn't prepared for.

it's where the doctor reaches in and manually stretches the cervix and uses his hand in a sweeping motion to loosen the membranes....it's supposed to help the waters break and induce labor naturally by weakening them to the point where the baby's position and weight will do the rest...IMO it was very painful and didn't work, but it works for some people :).

It hurt a little when I had it with my first pregnancy.  I was in labor 3 hours after the dr did it!  I delivered my baby exactly 2 weeks late!
