At 24 weeks I started having contractions. I called my doctor to tell him I was having pains. He told me I was fine. That I just needed to deal with it. After having contractions all night. I woke up covered in blood. Went to the er. They checked me, I was 4cms and fully thinned out.
The doctors will try to do everything in their power to keep the baby inside you. You have to get shots in your bum. That will help the baby's lungs develop. They go over the survival rates of having a premature baby. I had two ultrasounds. You're hooked up to baby heart rate monitors and all kinds of machines. You're not allowed to get out of bed.not even to pee. You can't eat or drink. I had four different ivs. They come in and do blood work every couple hours. 4 days later I delivered a 1lb 8.5oz baby boy naturally. That wasn't breathing. There was about 20 people in the delivery room. (Nurses, nicu staff, doctors and the flight crew). They brought him to life. Shoved him with tubes and rushed him into the nicu.

It is when you have contractions and dilation before 38 weeks.  The baby has to be coming out for it to count not just contractions.
I had pre term at 32 weeks.  Just saw blood.  No pain or anything.  I had no idea I was having contractions.
However preterm labor is wildly different for everyone.  Most people have pain and it's more obvious.
Only advise I can give is if something happens call doctor.  I did and went in.  Good's thing too!
