Question for new and expecting moms on crib safety

What is the latest safety tips on using bumpers in the cribs.  Someone told me that it was a suffocation hazzard so we took them out of my 5 mon old's bed, but the last few nites her arms and legs get caught between the railings and cries because she can't get out.  So what do you all think about baby bumpers?  Companies continue to make them so are they safe?  Thanks.

I might get a breathable one this time, too! I didn't use a bumper with my girls. It wasn't a problem for my oldest (except her binkies would fall out of the crib all the time) but my youngest loved to sleep with her face against the bars (which could've potentially suffocated her if we did have a bumper).

So I'm going to look into getting one this time around. There are different colors, too. I'd rather be safe than sorry when it comes to the life of my baby.

Griggsy recently lost a nephew to SIDs because he suffocated in his blanket. Doctors and nurses urge parents to not put anything in cribs except a tight-fitting sheet and the breathable bumper. It was the number one thing they urged at my baby care class when pregnant with my firstborn.

The breathable bumpers are very tight-fitting as well.

I have bumbers in our crib but i also have a baby motion detector.  It has two pads that go under the mattress that detects motion.  If my baby dose not move in 30 second i think it is... a alarm will go off.  Its awesome.  They use them in some hospitals to prevent crib death.  I got mine off craigslist.com for 50$.  They one I have sells for 160$ new.  Anita

Well its up to you.  I think that taking out the bumper is a soffocation prevention but at the same time getting little legs and arms caught between the bars could be a risk of injury.  its up to you, bumpers are not the #1 reason why babies soffocate, its just a suggestion.
If you are putting the bumpers on the bed, make sure that you keep the room well ventilated and maybe install a ceiling fan in the room to keep the air circulating.
I am putting bumpers on my baby's crib.

Here is what I think... remember when we were babies, our mothers had bumpers that were probably less safe than the ones that they have out now for our cribs.  And sure some babies probably did get caught in them and suffacate, however, there is a good share of babies that were just fine.  I also belive that if you tie the bumber down then there shouldn't be any way that the baby would get traped under them.  So I think the bumpers are as safe as ever, I mean if they keep the babies away from the bars so they don't get their legs, head or arms traped in them, then they are doing what they are suspose to do.

They are a SIDS hazard and babies do suffocate against them. There are breathable bumpers. You can find them just about anywhere now and they are about $30 apiece. I know onestepahead.com sells them. You may also find them at Babies R Us or Target or a similar store.
