Ring Sling Carrier

I am wondering if any of you ladies that already have children ever used a ring sling? I am looking into getting one. I just don't know how comfortable they are. I have issues with my lower back already from a car accident I was in 6 years ago.  I would like to wear my baby so that I have both hands free to do other things.

I don't like the peanut pocket slings. They only let you carry the baby in one position. Not all babies like to lay on there back.  Also you can only use them for a short time while the ring slings you can use up to 35 lbs which is typically 2 years I'm guessing.

I am thinking about making one myself. The ones I have seen on ebay and Etsy are home made and this way I can get the fabric design I like best.

What are you ladies thoughts on this? How easy and comfortable are they to use?

Yeah our lease is up Aug 31st and Im due Sept 2nd. I'm not moving being that pregnant and or just have had a baby.  I really don't want to sign another year lease but we'll see. Our roommate is looking into purchasing a house and wants us to move in with him.  There is so much up in the air right now. This is why I'm just not going to wait till the last mintue to do anything.

Well I will see if I have the time to make a sling myself, but it would probably be better to just buy mine. We will be moving shortly before I am due but it will be nice because I am going to wait to buy all of my furniture and baby stuff after we move LOL!

With all the research I did online they said to use solid metal rings. They listed a few different places to get them. I first need to find a sewing machine. My SIL has a really nice one that I think I will borrow for a few months I want to try and make a few blankets too.

One important thing to keep in mind when making your own ring sling is to use molded steel rings. You can get them on websites. They are stronger, and don't have a weak spot like the kind you would buy at a craft store. I made my own ring sling with my son and we loved it!! It takes some practice to get used to...I was told to practice with a bag of flour before the baby arrives. He wasn't a big fan of it when he was small. But about 3 months I would face him out and he LOVED getting to see everything and still be cuddled up to mommy.

I heard the Moby Wrap was also good.  But with both the Moby Wrap and Ring Sling it could be hard to initially figure out, but once you do I've heard that there better than all the other slings.  If there is a breastfeeding support group around out (from a local hospital), they may be able to help you figure it out if you cant.  Or sometime's going to a hospital or baby store and asking, Sometimes people there will know as well.

After I posted this I went and googles them wow there are a lot and I went to YouTube and watched several videos on positions and use with different age range. I found a really good site with great directions on how to make one. What I found on eBay and Etsy were so
plain I think I could make a nice unique one that I will love to use. A few ladies said it was a good idea to have two or three especially in the early age because of spit up and diaper accidents.

I am getting a hand me down Maya wrap that my sis used and LOVED.  She has an upright carrier now that her baby is 3, but used the maya wrap all the way up until 2.

The lady who taught this baby class we went to brought one of those to show us and it looked like a good idea. There are tons of positions you can use it in.  She recommended it over all other carriers and said she used hers with all her kids and it still lasted. She said all brands of it are basically the same so you could def make your own. Im leaning toward the baby hawk myself. There is a store near us that has every type of carrier and sling you could imagine that they will show you how to use and you can try them on with different size baby dolls to get a feel of it. Is there somewhere like that by you? That way You'll know if it will actually work for your bad back first.

i bought one and returned it when i couldn't figure it out. my lc recommended a mei tai carrier and i did like that. if you have back problems, definitely get a carrier that distributes the weight on your hips. a mei tai does. not sure about the slings- and sling i tried did not.
