TOTALLY OT!!!! (about deer) dont read if your "vegan"

So at my hubby got a chunk of deer meat from his friend who owns a restuarant........... IS deer meat any good, ive never tried it? Im thinking a slow roast in the oven...... maybe? -I love meat.... no where near being a vegatarian/vegan, (those of you that are vegans, this post is clearly not for you.) Just so we dont get any hard feelings.

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!! VENISON IS OFFICALLY BETTER then STEAK! AHHHH im hooked, i think im gonna send my hubby out to hunt one down for me.... kidding i wouldnt be able to eat it..... Ill try to find a farm or someone who i can buy from...... Im HOOKED!

My MIL actually soaked it in vinigar/water for few hrs.... then mayo, seasonings, covered in foil and put into oven at 400 for 2 hrs. IT WAS FLIPPING DELISHIOUS. Now im mad i dont live in a state where its common. :/ BC I WANT IT!

ITs the SOFTEST JUICIEST most TENDER meat i have EVER tried!

Deer can tasty gamey but it partly depends upon how it was killed bc it needs to have the blood drained quickly and in a certain way to avoid that taste. Most often we had venison stroganoff which is really yummy it's like pasta with meat sauce but instead of a red meat sauce you use sour cream and milk and stuff YUM

If deer is too gamey or wild tasteing you can soak it for a few minutes in white vinegar and rinse.  I personally like mine nice and fried!! But the crock pot is good too, I like to add a little green onion and bell pepper in there.(its the cajun in me lol) I have hunted since I was 4 and have gotten my husband and boys into it also the last 4 years so we have a freezer full of steaks, roast, back strap, sausage.....yum!

Did you try it? My freezer is packed with venison. My DH's family has a deer farm plus they are all hunters. If you like it youll have to find hunters and stock up bc at least in WI its illegal to sell. Let us know whhat you think!!:)

I love deer meat...right after deer season starts my freezer is full of venison...lol....The only thing I do do, is when I am like frying any kind of deer, except for ground deer, I soak it in milk or put a little lemon on it to get the wild out of it...It is just like beef as some one said above, just a little more robust, alot more flavor...YUMMY now I am wanting deer meat lol

I have grown up eating all sorts of meats my uncles and dad all hunt. Venison is good but not for all. It can have a gamey taste depends what the deer ate.

Crockpot is a great way to cook a venison roast.

Living in the south we were raised on "deer meat".  I definitely prefer cooking with it than any ground beef.  It's real lean, less fat and like you all said, very healthy. :)  Deer Roast, Deer Tenderloins, Deer steak and Deer Sausage. It's all good!  Plus it depends on how you fix it as in if it has a "game" taste to it or not.  My dad hunted all of my life and still hunts, I married a hunter and have always loved using deer meat. :)

We've also had Elk.  Both are great.

I hope you enjoy yours! :)

I personally am not a deer meat fan, I think it tastes too tough and "gamey" theres not a lot of marbling in it, so if you ground it for burgers, you'll want to mix in some fat. I've had it in stew and again its not awful, just not tender by any means, and not too much flavor with it. My dad has made some really good jerky with it, using his dehydrator. I like Elk and Oryx myself, although nothing beats good ol' home grown beef :0)

Good luck!

I will not eat it.  The smell of it makes me sick.   It has a "wild" strong taste.  It reminds me of liver.

i.LOVE. venison. we use backstrap and make some tasty zesty sauces for it...you can also make fried backstrap, or use it in roasts or stews....there are so many different things you can do with it. I actually prefer ground venison in my hamburger helper now because it's so much healthier and has such a good flavor :)

I have had deer sausage before, it's pretty good. I've never cooked a nice chunk of it, but I do know it has to be done just the right way so it's not tough and whatnot. I would think a crockpot is a great idea or in the oven. Sometimes I am not very good with how long to cook certain meats for so they don't get tough, so I will use my crockpot and it does all the work for me. :)

Putting a deer roast in the crockpot or in the oven is a great idea.  We usually put a roast in the crockpot with potatoes and carrots and a pack of Lipton's onion soup mix.  Everyone in my family hunts, so I have eaten more than my share of deer meat in my life.  :)
