Many of you have probably heard of the Chinese proverb that says "it is a wise mother who gives her child roots and wings."  I love this idea- give them roots so that they have something to come home to and give them the wings they need to fly into the world.  

I want to represent this in my nursery. I have two areas above my crib that need something, and I want to put a representation of each idea in a space- one space for roots and one space for wings.

Im trying to come up with soemthing crafty, or some way to represent roots and wings. Something that I can make, etc.  Im open to anything.

If you can think of any way, using any materials, etc, no matter how far fetched, I would love to hear contributions because I am stumped!!!

I agree with Amy on this one ...first thing I thought of was have a tree with roots and a bird (tho I love the butterfly idea better!).  Maybe you could integrate the crib as part of the tree trunk (especially if you chose a brown wood for the crib) ...have a 'green' fabric canopy over the crib ...ya know that chiffon-y kind of material you sometimes see over beds/cribs?  Then paint butterflies around the 'tree' ...or even better ...make 'em 3-D by making butterfly pillow type things for the wall ...lol, sorry, hard to get my idea across.  Pretty much take some fabrics and sew 'em together as a butterfly ... make two sides to it ...sew those two pieces together and stuff with cotton.  Great wall decor as well as for when your baby gets older and wants a pillow/stuffed animal to cuddle with!

BTW, I love this idea so much (especially the butterfly part ...they have a special meaning for me) that I might use it too!  Hope you don't mind!  *wink*

thats a very creative idea there i like it a lot. You could have the words of the chinese proverb on the wings of the butterflries while there flying around well i guess they wouldnt be really flying but you know what i mean lol or you can have like an apple tree or some type of fruit tree and have the words flowing through the roots of the tree...or even have one word start from the roots up the trunk of the tree up too the leaves then on to some butterflies as they are futtering away from the tree. i hope that helped somewhat lol

I typed in roots and wings in google images and it brought up a few cool pictures.  Sorry I can't be of much help, my mind isn't feeling too creative at the moment lol

Cute idea!  The only thing I can think of is a mural depicting a tree showing some of the roots underground with butterflies around it?
