This could be a sensitive topic

So this may be sensitive to some people. Pot smoking? Does hinder conception or have no effects at all? I'm curious to know what everyone thinks. I was having this discussion with my sister-in-law.

Maybe I should make it into a poll.

It really bothers me when people who are un-educated about marijuana try to post their OPINION about it. Although there are RUMORS that it affects male fertility, there has been NOTHING to prove that it affects female. (and lets be honest, they also say Mt Dew effects male fertility). Pot DOES NOT affect a baby! There are RUMORS that state that the baby may be "low birth weight" because they are being "deprived of oxygen" and yet there are so many more issues with mothers who smoke cigarettes while pregnant. I smoked up until week 20 with my son and he was 8lbs 6oz he is now 5 and a completely healthy little boy. I was on mirena, got it taken out June 30th they say it usually becomes 3 months to become fertile (both me and my hubby smoke). And I conceived on Sept 28th =)

If you smoke weed it has been proven fact that it effects the health of your eggs and a mans sperm. You may believe there is nothing wrong with your baby until school age when they  have a LD or Other disablilties that arise when they are older. I tell you research for It has proven a man that smokes weed daily has lowered his sperm count more than 50% and a women that smokes weed has weakened her eggs so do your really want to get pregnant and wander is my child going to have ASD, ASDS, ODD, ADHD, OCD, LOW IQ, ED, ASBERGER'S, MANY OTHERS... COME ON DO YOU REALLY THINK you  have the mind to raise a special needs child . (Yes some cases there is no reason it just happens), But if you could prevent it from happening don't you want to give your child a healthy life..... And the ability to go to school and learn like everyone else....

Im not sure if it effects the female trying to conceive, although it can cause your child to have mental handicaps and learing disabilities. I do know for a fact that it causes the male to have a low sperm count and that may cause you to have trouble getting pregnant.

WHEN PREGNANT A WOMEN THAT SMOKES WEED MAY NOT NOTICE ANY PROBLEMS WHEN THE BABY IS BORN MAY LOOK HEALTHY BUT IT HAS BEEN FOUND WHEN THE CHILD REACHES AGE TO HAVE CHILDREN THE GIRL OR BOY HAVE A HIGHIER CHANCE OF NOT BEING ABLE TO CONCIEVE ALSO A BOY AT BIRTH YOU WILL FIND HIS PEEPEE HOLE MAY NOT BE WHERE IT SHOULD BE CAUSE OF A RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY WHILE STILL AN INFANT. SO DO YOU REALLY WANT TO TAKE A CHANCE THINK HAVE A HEALTHY BABY AND THEN WHY CAN'T I HAVE GRANDCHILDREN BECAUSE I SMOKED TOO MUCH WITH THE PREGNANCY YRS AGO (THC LEVEL WAS LOW NOW THC LEVEL IN ONE JOINT IS LIKE SMOKING THE CHEMICALS OF A PACK OF CIG'S AT ONE TIME). SO REALLY YOU WOULD SMOKE A PACK A SMOKES IN ONE DAY WHILE PREGNANT , I GUESS IF YOU SMOKE ONE JOINT A DAY I GUESS YOU LIKE GIVING YOUR BABY THE CANCER CHEMICALS OF A PACK OF SMOKES A DAY....I HOPE YOU THINK TWICE....

I have no problems with people smoking at all! And your right not enought studies have been done either way to say if it will hinder conception for women.... I do know that it has been proven to decrease sperm count..... best thing to do if your smoking and trying to concieve would be to probably stop for that time.... I dont think that i would smoke during pregnancy either.... but hey once you have your little one its fair game! Good luck

Well I don't know about pot smoking...I know my mom smoked pot but don't think she did it while pregnant.  Now as for cigerettes....my mom quit smoking with my brother....he's never had breathing problems, nor has he ever smoked...he's always hated it with a passion....now with me she DID smoke the entire pregnancy.  I have always had breathing problems...my first few years I had allergy triggered respiratory issues...I also have asthma.  I started smoking when I was 13 and smoked until I was around 26.  I finally quit thank God.

I smoked my entire pregnancy with my first....she had low birth weight (4 lbs 15 oz) but was a few days over due, I also had an emergency c-section due to oligohydramnioses (lack of amniotic fluid-I had NONE left)  Now out of my 4 kids she's the healthiest...never had breathing problems, rarely gets sick....my other 3 that i DIDN'T smoke with have allergies and breathing issues.

SO...it can go both ways.  I say best thing is to just not do it while you are pregnant. Why risk it?

I have read that marajuana smoking by the male partner is worse because the sperm actually get "stoned" and they swin aound aimlessly and confused.  They no longer have the determination to find the egg and get settled down.  This may sound funny, but it was a scientific study.  It was too long ago to remember the source, but it may have been a university study in Buffalo, NY.

As far as the female partner smoking prior to conception, I have heard of many success stories.

I honestly see nothing wrong with smoking pot BUT I would never do it while pregnant or breastfeeding, in my eyes it just isn't worth it. Babies shouldn't be exposed to drugs, it isn't fair to them. I dont think pot is a hard drug but it is still a drug and it is someones personal choice to use it, that baby doesn't get to make that choice.

I wouldn't say it hinders conception - FOR SOME PEOPLE, but it probably CAN for others. Just like anything else, it depends on the individual and what other "problems" she may/may not have... However, I don't think it's a very wise choice for any mother/mother-to-be to make if she is trying to conceive. Why not stop now, instead of later only to find out it COULD cause problems for an innocent baby that is NOT CHOOSING to smoke pot... good luck!

it doesn't hinder a woman's ability to get pregnant. it does, however, limit sperm mobility and can cause infertility issues in men.  Smoking pot for extended periods of time...years.... will screw the little guys up.

There are no studies on it, that's why no one will have a definite answer in the matter. Just as they didn't have studies on smoking (like when my mom was pregnant with me) or know the effects on babies in the womb with a mother who smoked, how could they possibly know how pot affects one's fertility?

Sorry to sound so upset about it but I had NO choice in the matter. I was an innocent baby. When in doubt, just don't do it.

I have heard it can but no way of knowing. I don't believe any research has been done on that subject. I was told it can lower the sperm count in guys, but my first son's dad smoked a lot and I got pregnant like the first time we slept together. No trying at all.

Thank you all for your input. I'm feel the same way.  I was just starting to wonder that it might be a factor in why getting pregnant has been hard for us. I know a lot of women who have used it to help with nausea and that have smoked pot through most of their pregnancy with no problems.  Look at all the heavy drug users that have no problem getting pregnant. Pot is not a hard drug by any means.

I personally agree with pot smoking especially to help with the discomforts and nausea of pregnancy... If I could I would. Personally I'm not smoking now, but If I had access to it, I'd use it on occasion to treat my back pain. (I have a back injury and my idiot dr's won't treat me til My High risk OB says it's ok and I can't see my high risk OB yet due to insurance problems since they won't get my referralls approved in a timely manner.)

By the way... I think that women should use other methods of smoking pot like a vaporizor. It helps keep those harmful things out of what your inhaling... my cousin did a bunch of reasearch on how to safely smoke pot (sounds wierd but true).

I have to add that my mom smoked (cigarettes, not sure if she ever did pot) while pregnant with me. And while I'm here and alive to tell the story about it, she's not. She died from cancer.

I was conceived during a time when smoking was acceptable and even allowed in the hospital, after giving birth.

But I have a higher risk of developing cancer, asthma, allergies and other life-threatening diseases. It's not worth it, especially if you do not have any evidence that supports or debunks smoking (any type of smoking).

I don't think it hinders conception. Look at all the people on hard drugs and alcohol who get pregnant, not that it's right, but they don't seem to have a problem coneiving but their baby's will most likey have withdrawl problems if they continue to use them. (I don't believe pot is a hard drug though, like nickie said...they give it to cancer patients)

There are NO STUDIES to show whether or not it is harmful to an unborn baby.

Honestly I think smoking pot is a waste of money, time and brain cells. Why do it? Just eat right, exercise and find other ways to occupy your time.

Actually when I found out that I was pregnant with my second son I was actively smoking pot. I talked to my doc about it and because I had such bad morning sickness she said it would actually be better for me to smoke (no testing has been done to prove it is harmful! They give it to cancer patients for god's sake!) I did quit for six months and then started to take shots every day of blood thinners that made me yack again so I started smoking again. There was nothing wrong with my little boy and he has had no problems and offered me some relief. I can't smoke now because my husband is in the Air Force so I don't want to chance it :)

I have no clue whether it hinders conception or not, but I would imagine it is a detrimental to a fetus as an other drug.
