What is tong tie?

My nephew's dr told that he has tong tie and due to that he cant say words with letter 'R' properly. Eg for Rome he says Lome, for Get Ready he says Get Leady. He is 6yr old. Dr said they need to do a small surgery with Laser technique for opening is tongue tie. Any one else did this laser surgery? Any side effects or any negative thing abt this laser technique? Is is succesfull? Thanks

Hes only 4 months they had to do it cause he wasnt feeding right but they have said he wont have any problems now as he progresses and yeah he was in the room 10 minutes no anesthetic needed just gave him a bottle straight away after they did it I dont no if its different as they get older

Thanks. i really hope it doesnt affect his speech. I didnt really think much of it wen th midwife told me but after reading those posts i got a bit worried.

May baby it all depends on the severity of the tongue tie my son had a small one that actually did affect him breastfeeding but so far it hasn't affected his speech.  If your babys is mild you should be fine.

This worries me because i was told my baby of 19days old has a tounge tie. They said its a small one and doesnt affect him latchen on. But  th fact use are sayin u no of people and they hav problems with speech now scares me :(!

My brother had issues with R as well. Wainbow, wobin, Woll ovew...but he grew out of it. No therapy, no surgery. He was about 4 when he started correcting himself.

When I was little I had a horrible speech impediment. My parents took me to speech therapy and I was in it all the way to 3rd grade. Its completely gone now. It seems a little odd they want to do that with your nephew only having trouble with one letter

U can consult an ENT. Some children recover naturally as time goes. But its always better to consult a dr :)

my son has a problem saying some words too he is 4 and words like chocolate he starts by saying with his nose , no matter how much he tries it wont go other way ,  i even tried pressing his nose so he can say with his mouth but he gets stuck and nothing comes out , im taking  him to the doc tho to see what she says

My nephew had this at birth and had it cut straight away its straight forward and hes perfectly fine now :) dont worry he was in and out in 10 minutes

I have never been able to say my R's I was in speech for 5 years and it didn't help at all. I'm not tongue tied I've been checked. Hope the best for him it wasn't horrible growing up not being able to say it but it wasn't a piece of cake either, I got made fun of a lot but everyone "Thought it was cute/sexy" for some reason lol.

I wonder if they wait till theyre older if they will still say lome and leady at first since that is how they r used to talking?

I suggested to wait but they want tp get the laser surgery done as soon as possible as for them its a big prob mentally.

I think think its when ur tongue is like more attached to the bottom then normal but im not sure this is interesting to me because my 6yr niece is the same way I dont understand what she says and neither does anybody else and she says words like lome, and leady but my sis swears she speaks perfect I have a 4 yr old and to me and other ppl it seems my daughter speaks clearer its just hard convieving my sis to take her to get checked which I think would be better to do know rather then later in the future

Yes they went to consultva therapist but he said u have to go with the laser treatment after which we can start our therapy before we cannot.
Even though my nephew doesnt have prob in saying other letters. Just a prob of letter 'R'. Where else on google it says childrens with tong tie prob have prob in more than 5-7 letters.

I had the same problem when I was little, but my parents put me in speech therapy and it pretty much cleared it up...
