Where to put the accent?

Hey there everybody!

Well DH and I decided to name our daughter Zoe long before we were even pregnant and here we are, pregnant with a third girl! I've always thought that the accent mark went above the "o" in Zoe but apparently the grammatically correct would be over the "e".

Since I'm not one to always go by the book I'm thinking we might put it over the "o" anyway because it looks really weird over the "e". Have I lost you yet?

So, out of curiosity, which would you do?

And yes, the accent matters to me. I don't want to just NOT do it. Accents are freaking cool. My own middle name has an accent: Renée.

As someone who is multilingual....I have to say that I personally think it would be better to do what is gramatically correct - but that's just me!

Though I do have to say that some parents spell their child's name phonetically wrong. Such as my SIL. Her name is Anne (pronounced Annie) but that's how her mom spelled it. She always gets called Anne (such as Ann) because people just don't realize her mom intended for it to be pronounced "Annie".

I'm a grammar freak so I will probably go by the book on this one. I took French for 5 years and when I see the accents misused in French words/names it makes me grit my teeth!

True, true, my friends. If the accent on my middle name was on the other "e" my name would be pronounced very differently.

I guess we could just forgo the accent altogether then because I think I'd rather have it over the "o" or not at all.

o might make people confused and pronounce it like toe...I vote over the e

I agree with tired. it serves a purpose.  Would you pick any other traditional name and just add accents to it such as elizabeth (elizabéth)?  If so, than go for the O, if not than go for the e.

I picked over the O just becuase I think it looks cooler. Not official reason other than that.

Roke- don't like it spelled those ways

tiredbuthappy- I found the same resources when I did a search on the accent

KM604- it's called ALT coding. Hold down the Alt key on your keyboard and using the number pad (on the right side of your keyboard) type in 1666. You should get é.

Personally, I like it at the end, over the "e".  It seems more dramatic to me and you know how us girls can be (dramatic)....

accents have a grammatical function, not just to look cool. what you choose should be based on where you got the name (what's the language of origin), and how you want to pronounce it.

i did a quick search, and it is definitely goes over the e. The explanation makes sense too. I would go "by the book" because she will encounter enough trouble with people being confused by how to pronounce/spell it. (by the way, i love the name- so cute!!!)

"The two dots over the "e" are called a dieresis (or diaeresis), and indicate the letter should be pronounced separately in English.

The dieresis may look like an Umlaut, but it is not. The "Umlaut" serves a different function in a different language.

Oxford English Dictionary" (can't link to site directly because it is another social networking site where I found the info).

My middle name (and mom's first name) is Renee with the accent in the same spot, the same way!  I can't do it with my keyboard though, LOL.  I passed the name onto my daughter too (as her middle name).  I think it does look better over the "o" also.

I personally like it in the "o".  Is more unique.  The one in the "e" is more common, and it will be like in your name, in the first "e" instead of the last one.  I'm a making any sense?
