YOU MIGHT BE A FIRST TIME MOM IF ...

Hey Ladies,

I thought it might be fun for those of us that already have kids to leave some notes/advice for the new mommies and mommies-to-be about the things we did with our first baby that we can't imagine ever doing again!!!  Looking forward to learning from others, too!!!

Here's my first contribution:

You might be a first-time mom if you wake up your baby in the middle of the night so he/she doesn't miss a feeding.  They won't starve to death --get your sleep while you can!!!

You Might Be A First Time Mom If- You have the sudden urge to take a shower after getting pee'd on....even if it is about to happen again in the next 20 min lol.

Save your water bills ladies...it makes no sense to shower after getting pee'd on, because it's just going to happen again as soon as you get out of that shower. Babies know when we are clean, and they take advantage of that :)

You might be a first time Mom if......you buy a changing table, and then never use it.

There are so many things that we get overwhelemed with being a first time Mom...the preperation is intense!!  I bought a changing table for my first, and guess what, I never used it...the changing table became the bed, floor, coach.  The real changing table had clothes and such stacked on it....Don't get overwhelmed...you can go out and get if you need...just get the baiscs!!

Onesies, 0-3 months, and 3-6 months...Diapers, newbies and 3months...bottles, burp rags, a few blankets, cradle, port crib or crib, formula (just a few)....unitl you figure out what your little one needs and even what size they are...then just the baiscs!!!

u might be a first time mom or dad if u call the ER when your babies umbelical cord falls off...my ex-dh did this the nurses got a good laugh over his panic.
I worry for my current dh he said he is not sure he wants to hold the baby "until it's eyes open"  as if it was a cat!  I am taking him to some classes before ds get here:)

You might be a first time mom if...you have 100 onesies in a drawer and everything with snaps.  oh and take 10 different outfits for baby to the hospital.  one more sorry, if you buy an expensive bassinet.  My son ended up sleeping in a bouncy chair (for 4 months till we moved him to his crib) that my aunt bought at a yard sale for 50 cents that I swore he would never touch.

My husband and I realized that we rarely used the little undershirt onesies and we quickly found out that we liked only a few of the outfits that we bought so we used them over and over again and didnt touch anything else.  We also realized that undoing the snaps scared my son either one huge scare of tiny scares if we did it slowly.  We also realized that the outfits with zippers on them were just so much easier.   I will never buy another newborn outfit with snaps.  Also, I learned that I really had the urge to shop for my son now that I knew exactly who I was shopping for but we had everything already and no money left to shop with.  This/next time I will buy the necessities and save some money to have fun with after he is born.
I just read the one about the cord falling off...how funny.  At 4 weeks maybe, my son got cradle cab behind his ears and it stunk really bad.  I had no clue what it was.  now that I think back it looked like puss, but back then, I called the doctor crying that I thought something was eating behind my sons ear and I was scared it would get to his brain.  I got laughed at!

I totally agree about the bassinet and the changing table.  Our changing table did nothing but take up space, and my son also slept in his bouncy chair for the first months.

Other things I never used:
My baby carrier - It's a two-man job to get him in and put it on.
Fancy newborn outfits, especially with elastic around the belly - you want them to be comfy!  I highly recommend the full piece (head to toe) onesies with the zipper from the ankle to the collar.  Simple, comfy, and you don't need to bother as much with blankets.
Baby towels - Who says a baby can't use a regular towel?

ALSO ---
You might be a first time mom if you give up on breastfeeding too soon!  I did and I deeply regret it.  For some women it comes easy, but I think for most it is a challenge at first.  Don't expect it to be easy.  Keep at it with determination for at least a month before deciding it's not working for you.  If you want to breastfeed -- do not be discouraged.

I am a first time Mom and expecting Jaxson's (my son) arrival in January. I sure am glad that I spent only $10.00 on a changing table at a yard sale, $7.00 on the paint to refinish it, and $22.00 on the new pad...

I guess I "wasted" $39.00??!! I'm just sure glad I didnt buy the changing table (not that I could have afforded it! but I fell in love with one there..) at Pottery Barn! Sounds like I would be kicking myself!

To  LauraB78:

Well laura you can always try and use it as a changer.... just depends on where its located and how easy it is to get baby to!  lol or you can always make other uses for it like storage for clothes or toys.....  I am sure you will get some use out of it! and Heck $39.00 is not a bad deal! :-)

You might be a VERY new mom if you wake up in the middle of the night in a complete panic thinking that you fell back asleep with the baby in bed, and now are laying on him/her. I actually did this once before I even had him, and then my husband and I did it TWICE after he was born. We fell out of bed and were ripping the sheets off screaming at each other....talk about being exhausted!!! You want to know where the baby was??? Sleeping in his pack n' play...just as I had left him.

Am I the ONLY person who used/uses a changing table? My MIL made fun of me when I bought it, but my son is 25 months old and we STILL use it almost everytime. He tries to turn over and run away if we do it on the couch/floor...he knows that there's no messing around if he's on that changing table.

The changing table, I think (not that i have one) would be good maybe in the living room.  I always use the floor.  I'd rather get pee or poop on the floor LOL  I'm funny like that...

You might be a new mom if you really think your baby will be wearing those tiny little baby shoes, that may be good for one use...or fancy outfits, OR.......  this actually aggitates me....When people go and spend $65 on a infant pair of UGGs or Timbalands....  OMG!!!  My SIL did this and I was thinking, you could have gotten like 4 outfits for that price, what a damn waste!!!

One thing I got as a gift and never used was a bottle sterilizer!  Now One if I hadn't breasfed the entire 12 months...I may have used it if I didn't have a dishwasher!  But what most people don't realize is, the dishwasher does sterilize!

And I know magazines and baby check lists tell you to use that DRAFT or whatever it is baby laundry soap, well I've always used Tide since my daughter was born and it never caused her irritation, but you can see if it does or not.

G8r grl- I agree! I have a changing table and have used it ever since I brought Aspen home. Once she got to the point of wiggling every time I tried to put on a diaper I could no longer change her anywhere I desired since she'll only stay still on the changing table. So depending on your child it might be a good investment.

Ok you might be a first time mom if you get home from the hospital and they baby wont eat and honestly think that it is going to die. Like someone said earlier it is ok if they miss one feeding. I remember when I brought Aspen home from the hospital she would barely eat and I actually cried myself to sleep thinking she was going to die from lack of food.

Also you know if you are a first time mom if you buy clothes with all the snaps and buttons. For the sleep outfits honestly I suggest zippers because at 3am you aren't going to be in any mood to deal with 30 thousand little snaps.

I would say you might be the new mom not to know that if you miss a feeding your boobs will kill you. Plus a newborn baby will wake up through the night on his/her own anyway and if that doesn't wake you up your boobs will. The only reason to do night time feeding is so your breast milk will not dry up.

Ohh also I use my changing table ALL THE TIME!!!!!

You might be a first time Mom if you won't use "used" items for your baby.

I was so picky about using things from a second hand store, my Mom likes to shop at Kids Again and places like that. Every time she would bring something home from them I would toss them aside and never think to put them on my first born. Looking back some of the items where cuter than her new ones. With my second child I have done a lot of second hand shopping and LOVE IT! I am picky about what I buy but its just like buying something new and washing it once. When you wash them all and stack them up you cannot tell what was bought used. Especially newborn to 6 month clothing, most of that stuff is hardly ever worn anyway.

So my advice to new Moms, don't waste all your money on buying new clothes all the time. Save for college, when they look back they won't remember how much you spent on their baby clothes, they will be wondering where their future is.

Your a first time mom, if you get your first date night after baby is home and all you do is sleep thru the movie!
I actually did that one!!! lol.

Also. ladies, if your milk dries up be sure not to blame yourself... sometimes it happens. I made it  1 month  and 1 day. that day my milk dried up almost completely, I'm proud of how far I made it! esp. if it's a special case or your baby is preemie or sick.. sometimes stress will cause it!

You might be a first time mom if going to the shop with new baby looks like you are going on holiday for a week.  Baby nappy bag - packed with extra clothes, socks, nappies, wipes, changing mat, extra blankets - everything for in case something might get dirty. Ext, Ext Ext.

We did it with our first - had a bag full of "in case things may happen" - and that's not even the bottles - was breastfeeding.

With nr 2 quickly learned nappies and wet wipes most important extra clothes can stay in the car - if ever needed.

I also used the changing table a LOT!

I agree with a lot of the others...

2nd hand clothing, etc...I WILL be thrifty the next time around!

Buying TOO much clothing!  I'm still guilty of this, although I'm trying to limit her seasonal wardrobes.  LOL!  :)

Overpacking the diaper bad...like the world is going to end and we have to have every possible thing to survive for a year in it!

Here's my new one...
Being paranoid to leave the baby with CAPABLE babysitters.  "No one can do it the same as mommy" type attitude cost me a lot of baby-free nights!

I'm sure I can think of more later...my 2.5 year old "baby" just woke up!  :)

I always use my changing table. Babies have explosive poo sometimes that runs out their diapers and they wriggle around sometimes making for a messy situation. Plus,
I think that a changing table is a back saver, you're not hunched over on the floor or bed changing a diaper.
You might be a first time Mom if you think that cloth nursing pads are going to keep the milk from leaking through your bra. I thought those would work and had a soaked shirt when I was out and about one day, thank God I always carried an extra shirt in the diaper bag.
Beware of other babies too, if they start crying while you are still lactating you can be sure that the milk is going to start flowing. One day my sister was trying on bras in the target fitting room and a baby started crying, her milk started pouring out like a faucet. She was in the middle of changing and wasn't wearing a bra so she had to stand there hunched over just letting the milk pour out for about 5 min.

You might be a first time mom if your shocked to discover your be bed is soaked with breastmilk the first time you and hubby decided to have sex after your baby is born.

Your husband might be a first time dad if he thinks its funny to call you momma moo-cow in the first few weeks

(I tried so hard not to laugh during it because I swore to my husband that if he ended up laughing I would not ever have sex with him again.)

I didnt get to read them all but I am a first time mom and I LOVE my changing table. how weird is it that Julian can be screaming bloody murder then I put him on it and he smiles and is content! Haha!!! I attribute it to the fact that it is in front of a window and he likes the light!

You might be a first time Mom if you spend hours registering for EVERYTHING that is on the BABIES R US registry and you dont get half of it and you go back and buy everything else. The reason you didnt get it is because all the other Moms that came to your baby shower bought it and never used it!!!! I did it ! I am so Guilty of it too!
