How do u know when u conceived?

I know that they base when u get pregnant on the first day of your last period but how do u know when u actually conceived.

I think they just assume 28 day cycle and base it on that schedule. Is it possible to know for sure when you conceived unless you used an ovulation kit? We did but that still leaves you a 48+ hour window...
