Clearly those with FAS are more easily identified because this is the most severe diagnosis on the spectrum.
Oh no not at all. The research that I have looked into include those with fasd, which is the umbrella terms that includes fas as well as prenatal alcohol exposure itself. Its not limited to just the syndrome at all (as the syndrome requires facial abnormalities). Research has shown that even without the fas diagnosis, children with prenatal alcohol exposure show the same types of cognitive deficits, deficits in executive functioning, deficits in social skills, etc. Fasd effects about 40 per 1000 live births. If you would like me to send you the journal articles, please let me know.
Starzabove, is your research based on those with FAS and the effects alone or have you done statistical research into how many babies are born with FAS when their mothers have been drinking? I'm curious as to how you would create a 'control' group of this nature. Especially one where mothers are drinking 'moderately' within guidelines.
I hope that doesnt sound inflammatory...I'm genuinely interested, I have a degree is Biomedical Sciences...
Clearly im only talking about consuming alcohol while pregnant.
Well the difference is the effect. prenatal alcohol exposure is linked to low IQ, increase chance of miscarriage, linked to memory problems, problems with executive functioning (which is your ability to plan ahead and think things through), problems with social skills, problems with the childs ability to distinguish right from wrong and learn from past mistakes, problems with empathy, increase liklihood of psychological problems such as depression and increases suicide rate. I could go on and on. Caffeine (in soda and coffee) on the other is not good because it can increase your and child's heart rate which is bad and MAY be linked to hyperactivity.
So wats the difference between coffee, coke and alcohol? Is it because alcohol is such a bad thing in our society? Because its an addiction? But then everyone drinks coke and coffee. I like coke but never liked coffee. I dont drink only socially wen im not pregnant and thats hardly ever. I enjoy a glass of baileys and milk every now and then.
Interestingly enough women you have children are less likely to view alcohol consumption during pregnancy as harmful and are more likely to consume alcohol in subsequent oregnancies. Again if anyone wants the direct research articles message me.
I have posted on this many times before, but I am doing my dissertation on prenatal alcohol exposure and I can honestly tell you the research indicates that alcohol use during pregnancy is more detrimental than illicit drugs. Its a misconception by the general public and some physicans that a moderatw amount of alcohol is ok, studies has shown even low amounts of alcohol can cause structural abnormalities in the brain, it is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation, fetal deformities and neurological deficits. Unfortunately some physicans arnet always up on current literature or dont even talk to there patients about it. And some women get advice from friends and family based on experience and not actual research. Please message me if you would like actual data and research in this subject, instead of the general, well I drank and my baby is ok advice. Im sorry if im being rude, but when you spend 2 years researching a subject, you become very passionate about. Especially after knowing the wide range of effects.
No one is going to judge you. Everyone has there own opinion on things ..its part of life me personally ..I'm even scared to drink and glass of wine and I've heard its ok but again that's just me. Others aren't as scared and would ..and that's perfectly fine bcuz that's there choice.
Il be honest iv had two glasses of baileys and milk whilst out for dinner on separate occasions. This is my second child. Judge me all you like its two little glasses.
When I was pregnant with our first daughter, my husband let me ONCE suck on the ice cubes after he'd finished a white Russian, and while she's amazingly healthy, I wouldn't do it again. Mostly because I have very addictive tendencies, especially when i'm depressed, which I have been recently. For me, if I start, I may not stop, so I just avoid it altogether.
I've heard about the wine thing too. I'm just such chicken to try it im always like but what if.. and well um.. lol
Omg ! Im glad I chose not too .. taking chances with my kids is something I never do. And your right I think if my bestie seen the damage alcohol does to babies she wouldn't take chances like that again.
I've tasted a mix drink my bf had a couple weeks ago, but it was just that and no more. They say you can have a glass of wine every so often while you're pregnant so I hardly think a sip of liquor would compare to the amount of alcohol in a glass of wine.
I won't touch it at all, just because of my experience with those babies and kids. A lot of them were worse off than our cocaine-addicted babies...some women feel more flexible about it, but I'm convinced if they were exposed to FAS kids they wouldn't be.
She convinced me she was only taking a sip and not anymore so I hoping she stays with it .. I'm too scared to take a chance like that am I wierd lol I didn't try it wit my.daughter and I'm just as scared with this one . :/
The general recommendation is no liquor in pregnancy, but if she doesn't make a habit of it and it's a one time thing she'll probably be okay. If she does make a habit of it though, tell her to google "fetal alcohol syndrome." I used to work with fetal alcohol syndrome kids, and it's no joke.
Especially since liquor is heavier than most things it's mixed with, so the top of a drink is mainly whatever it's mixed with.
Yea I was shocked like Omg she said it wouldn't hurt the baby but I was worried for her
I agree, what's done is done, so I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't keep sipping. :)
Just a sip? I wouldn't worry.
