epidural or natural?

From the beginning I've been saying I'm going to get the epidural. But lately I've been thinking I don't want to be stuck in the hospital bed, I'd like to be able to walk around. Any advice or suggestions? Or even stories  because I'm so unsure

There's also an IV drop that isn't morphine (not sure they use it outside the US, because that's just out of my realm of knowledge). That's what I was referencing earlier, since it does not cross the placental barrier and morphine does. I'll have to figure out the name if you want to ask about/look in to it. Also, I think it's unfair to make a blanket statement that anything,  be it the gas/morphine/other drip/etc, just "doesn't work." It may not have worked for you,  but it has worked enough for some. The purpose of those particular drugs are not to take away all the pain, but to dull it without the danger that spinals/epidural have of causing total numbness/paralysis/spinal injury/even traveling the wrong way up the spine. Each person and experience is different, so it's a good idea to get simple opinions and then do some actual research for yourself since each option carries it's own risks. Just my two cents.

I had one of each and I'll be getting it this time as well I didn't have any problems with it I was up out of the bed in about 2 hours both times because you are not going to want to be up walking after that trust me I liked it

Has anyone had other pain meds during labour besides the epidural?  If so what was it and what did it do?

I personally do not like the idea of an epidural so I had my daughter naturally and plan to  do it that way again. I tore pretty bad and I felt EVERYTHING but i still would not change it! My sister got an epidural and it punctured something and she had migraines and the doctor made her take ton of caffeine to keep the migraines from being unbareable. Caffeine and newborns dont mix.  I feel the best plan is to go in with no expectations besides the fact you will be leaving with a baby.   That way you are not disappointed in yourself if you have to waiver from your plan .

Honestly I wanted to go all natural with my first and when the time came and they offered the epidural I took it I couldn't bare the pain anymore and in was so worn out from the contractions and 12 hrs I had already been in labor I did it to help me rest because it wasn't until almost 10 hrs later she was born. I guess my point is you may want not to have it but yu may change your mind when the time doea come

I got the epidural but it only worked on my right side. I could still feel everything on my left side and then when I had my daughter they realized they didn't give me all of it and they left the needle still in my spine.  It was awful

Well, I just had my baby 3 days ago and I ended up doing it without the epidural but not by choice lol.  I was at a 6 and my contractions started to get unbearable after I was checked so I requested the epidural and the lady came in right away and my contractions started piggy backing like not even 30 seconds in between and I felt like I had to push really bad  and I guess I held my breath trying not to so she trued lecturing me on how bad it was when I yelled I was trying not ti push so she panicked and got my midwife to check me again, mind you she just checked not even 2 mins before and I was at an 8 and she could feel the head when I yelled I had to push and her head was coming out not even 5 seconds after I was an 8 so there was no time for the epidural and I went natural, it hurt like hell but not too unbearable.  The worst part was trying not to push since my body was already doing enough pushing on its own. Lol

Thats horrible sounds like you had a very bad experience. I'm hoping to find out more about iv pain meds too. My friend had one when she was in labour. They gave it to her in her butt cheek

Never again. got an epidural during my last labor which was induced and it totally screwed everything for me. No one talked to me about prior I asked and got it no one even told me a thing about it. So next thing ik im totally numb and sleep for four hours wake up in just as much pain confined to bed get a second epidural does nothing for me 2 hours later after 10 hours of labor they give up on me and say I failed to progress and do a gd csection! I will not have one this time  im doing a vbac and I go all natural just like I wanted last time.

There are other methods of pain control. A spinal is done towards the end of labor and lasts about three hours. A good friend of mine has opted for that. There's also an iv drip that can be set up to take the edge off the pain and it doesn't cross the placental barrier. My mother had it with both my brothers (they are now 5 and 12) and I'm considering it. There are also birthing classes available that teach ways to help you through any pain. There are a decent number of things you can look in to four pain if you don't want an epidural. Talk to your doctor and do some research on reputable medical/pregnancy and birth sites.

I'm dead set in going natural. Have been since I found out I was pregnant! This is my first, so we'll see if it works out. I figure my body was designed to make babies and get them out, so hopefully I can do it
