help please

So my son is a week and three days old. He was born premature. Every time I'm going to feed him he falls asleep while I'm feeding so he won't drink anymore milk. And than he just drinks maybe less than an 1 oz and he won't drink anymore milk. I've tried everything I don't know what to do anymore. I don't want to force him cause he will throw it up. Than he will want the rest of  his milk 30 to 45 min after and than I don't know the time to give it to him again. I only give him 2oz but he never finishes it.

If your baby is premature than its normal. A lot of newborns sleep loke that when they eat. He'll start waking up more when he gets a couple weeks older

how small is he? Mybfirst child was only 2lbs 11 oz when she was born and we had the same problem. Its very hard because all they wanna do is sleep and just have less energy than normal newborns. We would just make sure we gave her a little every hour or so just so she got some milk on her. At the beginning we were only feeding her 3 mils. Which is nothing really cuz there is 30 mils in one ounce. But thats all she could take. So as long as ur baby is getting some milk down every once n awhile he should be okay:) i no its frustrating at time but dont get discouraged our little girl is now a year old and 15Lbs n super healthy. Just takes time and eventually he will get his appetite up!

He pees and poops often so I know he's getting enough food in his system. I just don't know why in having so much trouble feeding him. I wish he wouldn't fall asleep and drink all his milk all the time and I can have a regular schedule for him.

He drinks his milk only when he's hungry. But he will only drink 1oz and than the other oz in about half an hour later. And than he's hungry again in 1 hour and a half maybe two. And than I fees him again. But he falls asleep and that makes stop drinking.

The typical feeding amount for a newborn is 2.5 ounces of formula per pound of the baby's weight per day.

So if you have a 6 pound baby,  that's 15 ounces of formula.

If your baby isn't drinking that much,  or seems groggy all the time and uninterested in eating,  you need to call the Labor and Delivery desk at the hospital you delivered and get help.

My first was born at 35wks and I just had my 2nd 5days ago at 36wks. It is hard work for them to feed and they get exhausted pretty quick. I tried breastfeeding my son but I had to stop after 4wks because he was so underweight. This time I am formula feeding from the start and the hospital did up a schedule to build up his feeds, appetite and weight. He's measuring a little bit below the 10% allowance after birth today so we are increasing the frequency of feeds rather then the amount. If you are worried I'm sure yout peadiatrician would be happy to help. Good luck!

Babies tummy is only about the size of a teaspoon.  Very common for them to feed and be hungry 30 min later if your breast feeding.  If not breast. feeding then im not too sure. Have you called his ped?
