Baby's are smart, if you give them an easier way to get food (such as the bottle) then they will stop breast feeding because they know you will give them the easier alternative. As well as if you are not breast feeding exclusively your milk production will not increase and it will get more and more difficult. Best thing is to do one thing or another.
Here's a little advice I learned. Try to hand express milk if he's not latching on and you are too engorged. Stand in the shower and let the warm water hit your breasts while you gently squeeze. That should help and relieve pain and pressure.

If you are breast feeding why are you giving the baby formula?? Have you tried pumping?
