My doctor told me not to quit cold turkey. The best thing to do is start halfing how many you have a day for three days then go down from that for there days, so on and so forth. I found it helpful to buy a pack of cigarettes that you aren't use to smoking. I normally smoked minthol so I switched and hated the taste.
