Questions about Julians new formula and diagnosis!

As some of you may know my son Julian has had a rough time with formula. He started on Enfamil Lipil with Iron and went to Enfamil Prosobee then to Enfamil Gentlease and today was put on Similac Alimentum formula. I took him in today because he has been coughing and spitting up really bad and she said he has a Milk Protien allergy as well as GERD! I know there is a forum here on that topic but I am hioping someone can advise me on some info and expierances! Also who has used this formula and had a good outcome!

Is he projectile vomitting everything and losing weight?  My son was having this problem and they originally thought it was an allergy but it ended up being pyloric stenosis and he had to have surgery to fix it.  He is doing amazing now and is eatting like crazy taking the normal formula.  That might be somethign you could ask your doctor about

My son was on Nutramigen for about 3 months starting at 6 weeks old. It's super expensive...as in $23 for a small can of powder. I don't qualify for any financial help, and it got a little pricey ($125 per month...it was nuts). He did really well on it, but ended up doing better on soy when I finally switched him. He's still on soy milk (Silk) and he's 26 months old.

Nutramigen stinks! It's really, really smelly...but, you get used to it. The worst thing in the world is if they throw it up....I'll never forget that smell!

Wow thanks for allthe research!

ZET1- I am curious as to why my doctor didnt put Julian on that formula... They symptoms are the same the poo is super dooper runny and the reason they switched the formula was because he has a wet cough just like your baby. So your little one is on a formula still? Did she ever weeze atall???

BTS- Girl you rock! Thanks for all the very useful information. I am just so lost right now and dont know what all to do.

my nephew was the same way a few years ago and they tried everything they could think of, the nutrimigen didn't even work, when he was almost 10 months old he was put on 2% and lower fat milks and that solved his problem entirely, doc was never sure of what was wrong!!!      best of luck to you!!!!!!!!!

Neocate you can only get on prescription so you will have to see a pediatrician to prescribe it for you - its part of the PBS meds - what makes it different from the rest is that the milk protein is broken down into amino acids and the baby's body cannot recognize it as a milk protein.

Hi i have a daughter with a milk protein allergy -  it can present in different ways - she had this persistent wet cough - always runny poo but we only got her diagnosed once she had blood in her poo.  I breast fed her up till then - she got the milk protein through my breast milk - yah know weird.   I was referred to a Pediatrician and he prescribe Neocate formula - she started on it when she was about 7/8 months - she is now 2 and a half and still using it.  She is slowly tolerating yogurt and hard cheese (milk protein gets destroyed in making these 2 products)

You can PM me if you have more questions.  The best would be to have your little bub checked out by a pediatrician

I did a little bit of research this morning, took me a while but I think I may have something that could work for Julians little tummy. I even discussed this with my doc (hope you dont mind) to get his opinion, I didnt use names when talking to him.

I told him about your issues with Julians feeding and sensitivites to many formulas. He suggested that you speak with your pediatrician/doctor about the formula called

Nutramigen AA with lipil. It is for babies with severe milk and or food allergies, who have GERD and other gastrointestinal issues. You can read about it on www. enfamil. com

Nutramigen AA is the only Amino Acid based formula for babies with severe allergies to milk proteins and other proteins found in soy formulas and milk based formulas. Instead of being based on milk/soy proteins it is based on an acid, as weird as it sounds it's quite helpful for babies and parents when you don't know the exact sourse of issue.

He said if it was my case, and my baby going through what Julian is, he would suggest that formula. I do believe you have to get an RX for it, I know here you do.

Anyways I thought that might help. My doc said babies usually outgrow GERD by 1 year of age, but if they don't then further testing on the GI tract should be done. He said you can use Gaviscon or Mylicon to help, just administer it 15 min before a feeding and 15 min after a feeding.

He also gave me these suggestions to try help ease little Julians Acid reflux-

Elevating the head of the baby's crib or bassinet.
Holding the baby upright for 30 minutes after a feeding.
Thicken bottle feedings with cereal (do not do this without a doctor's supervision).
Changing feeding schedules.
Trying solid food (with your doctor's okay).

Other than that, he said to just keep following up with Julians doctor and marking his progress.

Similac Alimentum is usually used for colic, it is still milk based I believe. It's been 4 years since I used it with my oldest son. It was a life saver nonetheless. My son had colic for 4 months straight, and withen 48 hours had no more signs of colic or fussiness.

I have never heard of it being used for GERD, or for milk protein issues, but then again it's been a long time since I had to use it.

I know it helped my son very well only for his colic. My youngest son was put on Enfamil Prosobee for his milk protein allergy, since he was lactose intollerant. The Alimuntum I did try on my youngest son because I thouht his fussiness was from colic, and it didnt work, it made his poop really green, and he was still really fussy.

Thats really all the info I have, and I just want to wish you and Julian good luck, and I hope he feels better really soon!
