scheduled c section

I am going in for a scheduled c section February 15th 2011( primera mente Dios) and they are doing a spinal block and my question is has anyone ever had a scheduled c section and does in make you fall asleep or were you awake during and after. With my son I had an emergency c section and i passed out right after they delivered him for like 3 hours!! I think it has something to do with the drugs and epidural i had during labor. What do you ladies think??? I really want to be awake and breast feed right after cause it was hard to breast feed at first with my son because of the 3 hour separation after birth!!

Just another note on breastfeeding after a c-section...The first time you had one, you had already had painkillers given by IV, right? Well, the baby gets some of that medication as well, so if it made you tired afterwards, just think how tired HE must have been!  That can impact how well the baby is able to take to the breast as well.  If its a scheduled c-section, I wouldn't think that would contribute as much.

I had a scheduled c-section because of a heart disorder I have. The doctors didn't want me to go into labor becuase they weren't sure how my heart would react.
I was awake and alert during the entire c-section.  Once Braeden was out, they took him over to the table to get him cleaned up and weighed.  I know some places will still put them on your chest after a c-section. I talked about that with my doctor, but it wasn't an option for me unfortunately because I had heart monitors out the wazoo on me!  I had to wait about 2 hours before I was able to see him and hold him becuase they were monitoring my heart on a floor where they weren't able to bring him to me. And I was awake and not groggy the whole time. Was it ideal?  No.  However, it was what was safest for me and my baby.  And trust me, it hasn't impacted bonding or breastfeeding in the slightest. I didn't get to breastfeed for the first time until Braeden was almost 3 hours old.  And he did perfectly fine. We've NEVER had to supplement with formula, and he's almost 8 years old now.
I know the "natural" way is the preferred way. But sometimes its not an option for safety reasons.  It doesn't mean you won't be able to bond with your baby, or breastfeed, or have a wonderful relationship with him/her :-)

I have not had a c-section, but I can answer a bit of your questions.....

a spiral block does NOT put you to sleep....it will knock out sensation and if you're exhausted then you may fall asleep if you've been having contractions, but since you're scheduled to get a c before labor starts most likely you'll be wide awake through the whole thing. they very very rarely knock a woman out during a c-section, and trust me you don't want to be the case that they have to put unconscious because that's not usually a good sign.

it's possible that it was a combination of drugs and exhaustion that caused you to pass out after your last delivery. it also depends on how long you labored, because if you were laboring for let's say 14 hours...and suddenly had a c-section..not only are you exhausted from laboring and from the meds to help pain, but you're exhausted from the strain that surgery puts on your body. since you won't be allowed to labor before the section this time, most likely you won't have the same exhaustion problem from laboring...but it may just be the way your body reacts to major surgery and that's 100% normal...not to mention they most likely gave you IV pain meds as you were recovering from the surgery.

unfortunately, a c-section is not very "bonding and breastfeeding" friendly, it makes it very difficult (although it's possible!) so if you're very set on bonding directly after birth you really should consider finding a doctor who does VBACs...otherwise you're just going to have to hope that you react better to the whole ordeal and can bond and breastfeed earlier this time....bear in mind, though, that it IS major surgery and your reaction to the c-section last time is very common/normal, so there's really no way to tell. my sister-in-law who had a c-section and then a repeat elective c-section for her 2nd was unable to start breastfeeding until several hours after birth both times because of recovery from the surgery...but I know some women who have been able to do it within an hour or two, so it depends.

not sure I really answered your questions but there's the info you need, LOL.
