And lampebble, you're right, if you smoke during pregnancy, or smoke around a baby they are more prone to SIDS.

I know many people have "healthy" babies (meaning big in weight, at birth) while smoking, but I don't think it's safe to say that it's okay to smoke during pregnancy, I agree, becx82 was stating facts when she said all of those things CAN happen if you smoke while pregnant. If it's something you wouldn't put in your newborns mouth after he/she is born, it's something you shouldn't be doing while pregnant. If you can't quit, it really is best for your baby (and that is most important) to cut back. My mom smoked with me, and my 2 sisters, we were all under 6lbs, my sister had SIDS and they only caught her not breathing in her sleep, or she wouldn't have made it, I have asthma, and really bad allergies, so you never know if a baby is going to stay healthy til they're grown up.

My SIL had a healthy 8 lb 13 oz baby girl that had no health problems at birth. She might have some later on but for now everything looks normal. She smoked her whole pregnancy that lasted 41 weeks!

I know it's hard to quit but its possible. Finding something else to do with your time when you would normally smoke. I used lollies and it worked. It is harmful weather you smoke 1 or 10. I smoked for nearly 10years and the past 4 uears were 20 a day. I stopped as soon as I found out I was pregnant at 4 week's as I've already lost my first. I blamed smoking and that really help. I hope you quit for both your sakes.

Pazkimmel, I don't think becx82 was actually trying to be judgemental or mean towards her. She was simply stating the risks since a lot of women aren't actually aware of. Yes women know its dangerous to smoke during pregnancy but they don't always know why and she was simply educating her in case she didn't already know, cause sometimes that information is enough of a push of motivation for the women. Her post wasn't horrible in any way and I don't think it's fair to target her for simply stating what complications smoking COULD cause, awareness is always a good thing.

But in regards to the question, I myself was an on and off smoker. I quit once I found out but sometimes I found the stress far too much and would have a cig once or twice a month. I believe in quitting for pregnancy as a personal choice, and I realise its harder for some women. But I also believe you should never stress yourself out over quitting if you are having a bad time. I think it's great that you're aware that you should at least cut down and I think that with time and some patience you'll manage to get a good balance. Good luck :)

I smoked with both of my other boys...and they are extremely healthy born 9lbs 7oz and 7lbs 2oz.  With this one i was already cutting back before i got preggo and still had a few here and there but now can say i have officially quit after 15 years of smoking.  Its hard when your stressed and being pregnant makes it even harder.  There is always a risk with anything we put in our bodies.  I say cut back as much as you can and go from there.

They claim that smokers have babies with higher risks of dying from SIDs.
No judgement here, just posting what I read. :)

OMG becx32, what are you trying to do, give her a heart attack? There is risks to everything and not all babies are born with those problems if the mother smokes. I been smoking for 20 years and with all my kids. They were all perfectly healthy and over 8 lbs. I'm not by anyway condoning smoking while pregnant but I know how hard it is to quit. And doc says its safer to not try to quit while your pregnant as it can put stress on the baby. Just cut down. Baby can have withdrawals too. But don't let people like the first person scare you. Just talk to your doc. He or she can help you with ways of quitting or cutting down.

Try nicotine replacement. There are lots of different things to try and they are all much better than smoking. Im on nicolites an electronic cigarette. Its great it feels like you are smoking and you even breath out smoke but it is completely harmless.

i smoked with my first babies although i did not completely quick i did cut back. my 3 boys were all born healthy my eldest weighing 9pound 6oz my second weighing 8pound 3oz and my 3rd weighed 8pound 15oz. i am pregnant now with my 4th but not smoking this time because i had already given up when i got pregnant. Do the best you can its going to be hard but even cutting back has got to be better than doing nothing at all.

You're probably gonna get a lot of s*** for posting this from a lot of judgemental women but honestly it is very hard to quit. my dr says quitting is the ultimate best but cutting back helps alot too. and try not to look up too much stuff on google about it. youll feel worse but youd be surprised at how many women smoke during their pregnancy.

A doctor will tell a woman that if she is having a hard time quitting period to not do it cold turkey because the withdrawals, or stress from not having one, can do harm to your baby.
I was a new fresh smoker of 3yrs so it was kind of tough for me to stop. I use to try and find stories that would say it was ok just so I would feel good about it. My trick I used was cutting back. What helped was the people who would eyeball me and shake their heads when the even seen me purchasing them. My boyfriend who works hard everyday enjoys a nice smoke. But slowly but surely I cut down month by month and now I officially don't smoke anything. My last cigarette I would say I had around 24weeks and it was just one that whole day and before that I didn't have one in like a month and a half so it got much easier and it will for you too.
But my story or anyone elses doesnt makes it better. Because every inhale of nicotine and toxins will do harm. Just try to take it easy.
Ps: I am 29+3 weeks pregnant with my beautiful healthy baby girl!

Lots of issues and birth defects. Cleft palate, cleft lip, asthma and respiratory issues after birth, problems with spine, bowel eyes and ears, also abnormalities can be found with the placenta.

Also you will probably have a smaller baby. This is caused by the smoking restricting blood vessels and therefore reduces the amount of nutrients and oxygen getting to your baby. This leads to low birth weight and the baby being more prone to being ill after birth.

I would see go see your doctor and see what they suggest. Good luck :)
