My mom smoked both pregnancies with me and my younger brother. Both have asthma. Not 100% sure if that's how we got it, but it was enough to scare me into quitting as soon as I found out with both of my pregnancies. She also smoked a pack or more a day tho. I know not everyone can quit like that, but cutting back is the next best thing.

you said asthma doesn't run in your family, so if your child does end up with asthma then you'll know it's likely from smoking since it's not in your family. How old is your other child? If he's age enough to run around and get really worked up, it's likely you would've noticed it by now. I found out when I was about 3-4 and was running heavily and would get asthma attacks, so I can't play sports or anything like that, it s*cks!

I agree babyturnip, you never know if the baby is really "healthy", many many things can happen from smoking during pregnancy, not only smoking, but 2nd hand smoke after with a newborn, even smelling it on your clothing. My mom smoked for all 3 of her kids. I have had asthma since I was 4, allergies TERRIBLE every season, my sister had SIDS, thank god they caught her not breathing or she would be dead, and my other sister has a heart issue as well.. all likely linked to smoking, your child is conceived and should be brought into this world with the greatest amount of health possible. It's not his or her choice to smoke and it's unfair to force that on a baby, think of what it's doing to YOUR lungs, let alone your childs.. it's definitely something to consider, just because one baby is born healthy, doesn't mean yours will be, there are MANY risks of smoking, especially SIDS and I don't know about you ladies, but I would do ANYTHING for my children, I would cut off my arm if it meant they would be healthy, literally... so there is no amount of addiction that could prevent me from keeping my kids safe and healthy. It's also something that's extremely hard to do, but it's an addiction brought on by yourself, you knew the risks and side effects when you began smoking, that's something that shouldn't be taken lightly, even from the first cigarette. I hope no one takes offense to this, I'm not "bashing" anyone, but it drives me nuts that people say ohh my baby was perfectly healthy.. well you never know until the child is caught having an asthma attack, a heart issue, or found dead from SIDS. It's something that should be taken very seriously.

this is my 5th pregnancy 6 baby. I smoke with every last pregnancy. and every last pregnancy came out healthy except for the twins and that's because I have them at 28 weeks because of a short cervix not because of smoking. my oldest is 13 and she is the smartest brightest girl I've ever seen. my twins are now three and they are smarter than ever. not one of my children have asthma any kind of breathing problems or anything. and I actually smoked a little over two packs a day that was more than I smoke before I became pregnant I was craving cigarettes. I feel that it all depends on the persons health. there are plenty of children born everyday to women that do not do any kind of drugs cigarettes alcohol or anything they try to have the healthiest pregnancy and do everything right.
no one will know the outcome all I can say is pray that's all I did I pray because I did feel bad about smoking. but I really really couldn't stop smoking the doctor gave me a patch and it didn't work I tried everything. I leave everything in God's hands so if it was meant for one of my children to be sick they will be. you girls think positive and everything will turn out alright believe me I know.
