tattoos

I know they say not to get tattoos during pregnancy, but why is that exactly? And is it ok if you know for a fact the equipment is sterile? (My husband is a tattoo artist)

I got a tattoo on my lower back(a cover up) just a few days before I found out I was pregnant and my baby is fine....but like others said ..the real risk is infections and also as the baby gets bigger..it can feel the same pain the mother feels....also my tattoo peeled off in some places and I do believe that for me being pregnant it didnt take the ink as well and I did get bumps aound and on my tattoo that I thibk was caused for me being pregnant which made my skin more sensitive

I was told by my doc that the risk of infection is alot higher and if the tattoo hurts alot then it can stress your body and the baby out which is not good

I'm not sure exactly what the medical reasoning is, but if we have to be careful about the products we put on our skin, I would think that would be doubly true for anything we put IN our skin. It just seems too risky; I'd definitely wait til the baby got here, it's only a few months.

Also your risk of infection is higher while pregnant, the ink can get in your blood, also since you're pregnant your body is more sensitive to pain and you or your baby can go into shock

I've heard there's a chance of getting ink poisoning and because your blood thins out during pregnancy its not good BUT I got a tattoo when I was pregnant with my second before I found out I was pregnant. And I never had any problems and my baby is a big healthy 1 yr old

I found this on a website:
"Many pregnant women out there wish to get a tattoo but are worried regarding its safety. The first question which comes in their mind is: Is it safe to get tattoo during pregnancy? According to doctors and tattoo artists the answer to your question is NO. There are many risks related in getting a tattoo during pregnancy. Some of the major risks associated are listed below:

Risk of infection is one of the major risks related to the process during pregnancy. Getting tattoo during pregnancy increases the chances of infections like HIV and hepatitis. The risk of infection reduces with proper sterilization of the needles used for tattoo making.
It is seen that some tattoo artist refuses to make tattoo on expecting mother because there are chances of fainting. Dizziness or fainting is bad, both for the expecting mother as well as the developing child.
The ink used for making tattoo is other reason why tattoo is not safe during pregnancy. Though there are no studies showing the affect of ink absorbed on the developing fetus but as a precautionary measure tattooing is avoided during pregnancy.
Due to cosmetic reasons also one should avoid tattooing during pregnancy. After the delivery the skin is no longer stretched hence affecting the look of the tattoo adversely. Tattoos are made to stay for life-long hence it is better to wait till you gain your normal shape and weight after pregnancy.
Even after reading the above mentioned risks associated to tattoo during pregnancy you wish to get one, it is better you consult your doctor. It is better to check the hygiene of the tattoo parlor and keep the artist informed regarding your pregnancy."

But I always heard that as long as the equipment is clean and as long as it isn't a big tattoo it should be okay. I'm scared of needles, so I would never get one, but I know people who have been pregnant and gotten pretty detailed tattoo's while being pregnant and it never affected them or the baby. They probably just say not to do it to reduce a risk of infection or something.

They don't know if it affects the baby or not. I was supposed to have my half sleeve finished for my birthday, but I'm not going to chance anything and just going to wait
