ulcerative colitis

I am 36 weeks pregnant with my first baby. 3 days ago i was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Its inflammation of the colon and it never goes away. I was very sick for a while before finding out what was wrong. After starting the medications, im starting to feel better :) little man is still doing great but im wondering if anyone else has gone through this or knows anyone who has. I dont know if i will still be able to breastfeed as planned because i am taking prednisone which is a steroid and i dont wanna hurt baby... ANY ADVICE/FEEDBACK APPRECIATED :) :)

Tha last flare that I had, I took my meds like I was suppose to & it put me into remission. Everyone is different tho depending on how severe it is, if meds can be tolerated, and what foods wrk best for you. My doctor told me that he plans to do a vag delivery soo it's best you ask yours cus its all up to him. Some of tha meds will allow you to breastfeed but prednisone is a steroid which you should ask him if you can breastfeed but some Drs wont. I manage to stay in remission by watching what I eat & taking meds as needed. Like I said, you wont really kno until you kno what you can tolerate. Surgery would be tha last option cus there's soo many meds & treatments to help but its manageable & can be lived with!!

My friend has it and pregnancy actually helped hers like go in remission kinda. Not go away but the symptoms subsided. She didn't have to get her treatment anymore.

Hey @ fiercemommy: thanks for replying! Yes i am very new to this so i do have a lot of questions. How do you manage staying off medicine? Does being in remission let you do that?? Im curious to know if i will be able to deliver vaginally or if i will have c section. Im due in 4 weeks. Been on prednisone 2 days. Also wanna know if i can breastfeed while taking the medicine. I kinda think i will just formula feed so i can get better. I have a dr.appt thursday and plan on asking tons of questions then. Its just all new to me.and im glad you came across this because it helps to have someone who knows what im goin through :)

Hay mommy! Luckily I came across this post cus I have ulcerative colitis as well. I was diagnosed in 2010 at tha age of 19. There's really no say soo of where this disease comes from but it isn't curable & can be managed with meds. I've been on Asacol but was taken off due to it causing me hairloss. I'm now on sulfasalazine but luckily I've been in remission tha past yr & a half. Since I was in remission when I got pregnant, I've continued to be in remission and now 27wks. I dnt take meds but if I have to, I'll take them as needed. If I stay in remission until its time fa me to deliver I'll be able to deliver vaginally. Sometimes pregnancy causes a flare or it can put you into remission. You also have to be careful with what you eat cus sometimes your colon wont agree with it and it can make symptoms worst or cause a flare. Pineapples are horrible for me & I miss them soo much. If you have any more questions dnt be a stranger to messaging me. I've educated myself well enough on UC to answer just abt anything.

We are going with Damyen Michael Lazaros.  I like Xzavier its really cute.  I had to choose a name that started with a D because my boyfriend likes what we have going on.  Two girls names start with A and our son starts with a D so this one has to also lol

it is but all that matters is that he is a very healthy boy.  and even though your stuck with this for life just take care of yourself.  your going to have a lot of changes and I hope your s-o is being very supportative.  if he's big that's fine too.  the steriods might actually have a affect in making his develop faster.  that could be a benefit

I was 120 pre pregnancy and gained 60 pounds. Did get a pretty big booty lol. When i went in for my growth scan at 31 weeks he was weighing 4 1/2 pounds instead of the "average" 3.3. Dr didnt seem.concerned but then again i didnt know then that i have this colitis.... When i went in last tuesday for appt to.see why i was sick, i lost 8 pounds. Im not afraid of c section but its just crazy to plan all these things for.9 months and then it ALL changes ya know??

not to scare you but I think you most likely will have a c section and they should be planning that soon a couple weeks more of him getting some of those steroids should be fine but It could make him gain more weight which would be difficult to push out.  my sister was a very tiny girl and within a year she has gone up 5 bra cup sizes and gotten a bum.  so it is possible he might be a big boy now

@ kayla: i have mixed feelings about it and so many questions because i already dont like the fact he is getting it while i.carry him inside me. I know the BF is more right to him and thats what scares me. I am totally fine with formula feesing ( but preffered BF) but just finding out so recently i want to.make my choice. I am considered high risk the rest of.my pregnancy now so i have a dr.appt thursday to ask all my questions. Also there is.a.possibility i.may not be able to deliver vaginally??? May end up with a c section. Pregnany was.going SO well up until now and there isnt.much time to find out all my answers. Thanks ladies for your feedback. Very much appreciate it :)

my sister has it bad.  hers came from her gluten allergy.  she was diagnosised last year and evety morning and night wince she has to give herself a steroid enema.  at first she got embarrassed cause she's only 23.  but if taken care of properly you won't have it get any worse.  if she doesn't keep up eith it for one week she has a chance of surgery and her intestine taken out and a bag put on.  good.luck.  but I ddon't think you will be able to breast feed with this steroid cause it does cause a lot of symptoms that could affect baby
