vaginal tearing/episiotomy

I was wondering if during delivery does everyone need a episiotomy or have vaginal tearing? I'm kinda afraid of the pain

I've had 10 and havent been cut or torn with any of them, your midwife or doctor should be coaching you when your babies head is crowning and you should be told not to push, but to breathe babies head out, this gives the skin time to stretch and if that happens then you should need to be cut or tear, in saying this probabvly most doctors dont really care if you need to be cut etc, so you can do perineal massafge, which will help (google it )

I had an episiotomy with my first and it wasn't too bad during the healing. He only cut because the baby couldn't come out, everytime I pushed she would show her little head but never crowned and when I stopped she disappeared so he cut and after the dr did she popped right out. It's not as bad as it seems. It just stings a little during healing but they give you a little squirt bottle and it makes it feel better, took about 4 days to heal

A graze is like it sounds...a slight tearing of the first layer of skin. It's like skinning your knee. It will sting a little while it heals but doesn't require sticthing. It's the less than a 1st degree tear. The degrees go from Graze to 4th degree tear.

I tore with my first and third but not my second the first was worse becauuse she was my only full term baby the second he was only 4lbs but so was the third but either way it depends on the woman and baby position and size but you really dont notice

I didn't require any stitches because I didn't tear. I did have what they call a graze. My midwife helped me out while I was pushing by using oils and massaging the perineum. It sounds awkward but i didn't even notice really. I was too busy with the whole labor and pushing thing. HA! You can ask if you midwife/doctor will do that for you. I also labored in water which can help soften the tissues so they stretch better. Another good thing to do while you are pregnant is something called Tailor Sitting. Google it. It stretches the perineum and opens up your hips. I sat like that each night of my last trimester.

If you tear, most likely it will be a minor tear. The bad tears aren't as common as smaller ones. Episiotomy can be worse than a tear...research those.

no, it depends on the woman, the delivery and size of baby. I had a vaginal tear, 10+ stitches and a graze. After painful labour it honestly isn't that big a deal. They stitch you up whilst you're spending precious moments with your baby and you can have gas and air if you find it uncomfortable. Trust me after labour it's no biggy at all. I didn't have an epistiotimy though.
You could even avoid any stitches etc! so don't panic, Not everyone has these issues at all. In my case, the midwife made me push before I was ready. Left the catheter in which caused a few stitches. So For me she made it worse! please don't worry. x
