hello am 42 year old male recently had an abdominal mri and there was a mention of atherosclerosis of the infrarenal abdominal aorta. nothing else and was not noted as a problem as scan impressions were normal aside for reason for scan (likely benign liver lesion). is this normal? as stated there were no numbers or %s given.

Hi,
Are there symptoms present? I understand your concern regarding the MRI result and it is best that you discuss this with your attending physician for proper management. Obstructing plaques caused by atherosclerotic occlusive disease commonly occur in the infrarenal aorta and iliac arteries. These plaques may induce symptoms either by obstructing blood flow or by breaking apart and embolizing  debris to more distal blood vessels. If the plaques are large enough, they can also reduce blood flow to the extremities. It is important that  you check with your attending or be referred to a vascular specialist and evaluated for risk factors. Take care and regards.

thanks for reply. will follow up but quite frankly, if this were significant I would think they would make a point of elaborating on it but who knows.
