Is the treatment for NMO and MS somewhat alike Im wondering about heat both ambent and applied(hot tub, heating pad) in adding to fatigue or any other symptoms or possable relapse/attack
Dr. Veena:
Hello; I was just wondering - because neuromyelitis optica (Devic's Disease) often presents with optic neuritis, which is also commonly considered a first symptom in multiple sclerosis, is it standard procedure to include testing for Devic's Disease when blood is drawn to for testing in patients who are being screened for possible MS? From what I know of Devic's, although the "classic" display presents lesions differing from those of "classic" MS, there are other variants which can be more simlar to the MS display in MRI imaging.
Hi,
Thanks for writing in. Devic’s disease is a inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system damaging the myelin, especially of the optic nerve and the spinal cord. Manifests with temporary or permanent blindness with varying degree of paralysis in the upper and lower limbs. Diagnosis is made with the help of MRI and blood work along with neurological examination.
Consult a neurologist for complete evaluation.
Best.
