Brain eating virus that induce fits.

Hi There,
I have a step brother in Thailand that suffers from violent fits and as a result has spent two months unconscious in hospital before regaining consciousness with brain damage. The brain damage resulted in bad memory and although he is 17 years old, he is now like a 10 year old.
Because of contact issues in the family I don't have much infromation about it. From what my mother can tell me is that he has a brain eating virus of some form that makes him have these fits.
The virus maybe water related and the condition started only two years ago (I don't have the virus name).  Before then he was a happy healthy young man and that's all I know.
My mother has asked me to find out if there could be a cure for this condition.

Hi
Thank you for your comment, it was very helpful that I could put a name to the illness. From knowing what it is I was able to do further online research about the condition and possible treatment. My brother is currently in hospital, we are hoping that he will recover and without anymore debilitating effects.
Thanks again.

Hi,
How is your stepbrother? Encephalitis or inflammation of the brain caused by a virus may present with fever, headache, nausea and vomiting, seizures, personality changes, memory loss, and even coma. It can be due to a variety of viruses and may not respond to antibiotics at all. Symptomatic treatment like fever and pain medications may help. Many people with encephalitis make a full recovery. However, in some cases, swelling of the brain can lead to permanent brain damage and lasting complications like learning disabilities, speech problems, memory loss, or lack of muscle control. It is best that your mother talks to your step brother's attending physician for proper evaluation. Take care and best regards.
