Hi Molly
I did a search on Polymyalgia rheumatica and found you. I as well may have this. The specialist is currently investigating me for this. I was told I will have to be on prednisone for 2 years. By the Dr. saying this, I assumed it would go away after that. Reading other replies it seems it goes into remission and does return. How long will this keep happening? I imagine it does not always go into remission. Is this a very common disorder? From those that have it, I would really appreciate as much info as you feel up to. No one knows better than the people that have it. I am female in my fifties.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,
How are you? Polymyalgia rheumatica causes muscle pain and stiffness in your neck, shoulders and hips after resting. This is most common in women and almost always occurs in people over 50. This may sometimes occur along with giant cell arteritis, a condition that causes swelling of the arteries in your head. It is importsnt that you proper evaluation was done. Have an open communication with your doctor. As rkolk mentioned, you can always have a second opinion when in doubt. Polymyalgia rheumatic usually responds to treatment. Take care and do keep us posted.

Hi Molly I was diagnosed several years ago one test that was used was a SED rate test. The pain can be intolerable at times. I was treated for a couple of years with steroids which helped considerably however steroids over an extended time can cause their own issues. Giggicarn1940 is right it can come and go. Mine lasted two years was gone for a couple of months then returned. Trust your doctor but don't be afraid of getting a second opinion.

I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica about 5 yrs. ago.  I suffer from it every day. They say you can have it forever or just for 4 days or so.  I am treated with oxycontin for pain relief, and Voltaren for arthritis.
