What are the causative factors in hemosiderin?

I have hemosiderin, sometimes referred to as Rusty Ankles. In my case, I've had this rust colored discoloration in my lower legs for over twenty five years, and the discoloration is getting progressively worse (higher) in both legs. There is no pain but it is unsightly.

I've been told not to worry about it, but I'm curious...what causes this condition and is there anything I can do about it?

Would appreciate any information/advice this subject.

Thank you., Jim in Georgia

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,
How are you? Hemosiderin is a yellow-brown, granular, iron-containing pigment derived from the breakdown of hemoglobin. Hemosiderin staining or hemosiderosis, is a brown or rusty discoloration of the skin caused by buildup of hemosiderin in the interstitial fluid such as found in venous hypertension. However,  there is not a good way to remove hemosiderin stain especially from the leg. Have this checked by your doctor for proper management. Take care and regards.
