Chronic cough with excess mucus

Hello, I'm 21 years old and dealing with a chronic cough. I smoked throughout much of my childhood, and in my late 19th year I developed a chronic cough. I have not smoked for almost a year now, and my cough has yet to improve. I have had x-rays, and bloodwork done, as well as breathing tests, and the doctors have yet to pinpoint a problem. Although I will cough throughout the day, the worst of it comes in bursts, generally me coughing so hard that I gag, and throwup. If it happens before I eat I will throwup a large amount of clear mucus, with an acidic/metallic taste. Since I also suffer occasional heart burn, my doctor suggested I was suffering from GERD, or acid reflux. The prescription relieved my heartburn, but not my cough. Is there anything else it could be? It is interfering with my life.

I should also mention that I have taken prescriptions to treat infection, or bronchitis to no avail.
