Difficult to breathe after a bad viral cold & cough

I've been fighting a bad viral cold & deep constant coughing for just over a month now.  The cold symptoms are gone but the cough lingers on.  It has become extremely difficult to breathe normal.  When I take a breath in, I almost always have to cough.  Any activity makes me cough and spit up mucus.  I feel like something is swollen inside.  I just feel like I can never get enough air into my lungs.  I have been to see my doctor (first time a month ago), and he diagnosed me with a Viral cold.  2 weeks later, after coughing constantly, bad neck, face and headaches, he prescribed Augmentin.  No difference after 10 days later.  Still heavy coughing.  Took chest xray, sinus xray, blood work, EKG...had thalium stress test 2 months ago....all normal results.  No pneumonia, bronchitis, or strep throat.  After a month and not being able to breathe right....my doctor prescribed a steroid.  Immediatly began blowing up, dry mouth, tightness in chest....This is making working almost impossible for me and truly stressing me out.  Prior to Dec.15th, I was healthy, perfect weight & always going to the gym or riding my bike.  What is wrong with me?  Beginning to think this will never go away.

Yes....I have stopped exercising.  Finding it extremely difficult to catch my breath just walking and talking.  I'm seeing an ENT doctor today.  Perhaps, he can shed some light on all of this.  I just wish I could get back to normal and resume my daily activities.  Still closing up during the night and struggling to get air.  It's pretty scary sometimes, but I'll hang in there & pray I get back to normal soon.  Hope you're feeling better.

Hi Drex I am actually having a very similar problem to your self. I have had a chest infection and the mucus nearly seems to be all gone but yet I still have this tightness in my chest. I was given 2 rounds of ANTI-BIOTICS and also steroids. It is incredibly frustrating as like yourself I am a bit of a fitness finatic. The question when will it go away??
Have you stopped exercising?? let me know how you are getting on.
